SOFIA PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA - Stravinsky & Tabakov

SOFIA PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA - Stravinsky & Tabakov
ID: GD102
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection: Orchestral Works
Subcollection: Orchestra

Released in 1996, the CD links together two 20th-century composers - Igor Stravinsky and Emil Tabakov. Its originality is not only in the combination of Firebird and Concerto for Orchestra but also in Tabakov's interpretation as principal conductor of the Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra. And if in the Firebird ballet suite, a classical work of the 20th century, both the orchestra and the conductor have unanimously achieved the sound brilliance of the score, with all its variety of colours and sound effects, in Concerto for Orchestra the author Tabakov continues not only his own development but also the elaboration of the traditions of the Bulgarian school of composing in the symphonic genre. In its three movements expanded in time, the composition reveals a modern Bulgarian world of feelings and expressiveness in which the rhythm and the Bulgarian merry and sad songs are present. The performance is of a high class, impressing with depth and multitude of orchestra colours.

GEORGI TUTEV - COMPOSITIONS

GEORGI TUTEV - COMPOSITIONS
ID: GD215
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Subcollection: Cello

The release features three of the most outstanding opuses of Georgi Tutev, a representative of Bulgaria 's music avant-garde. The composer wrote a relatively small number of opuses, mainly in the chamber-instrumental and symphonic genres. The years of work on almost every composition of his speak of mature consideration and precision, of logical coherence. In Tutev's music one finds artistic achievements worthy of respect, rather than mere experiments. The first piece on this CD, Metamorphoses for 13 Stringed Instruments belongs to the early period of his work, while Longing for the Lost Harmony presents the composer both as a musician and as a philosopher. Here he expressed in sounds his thoughts and feelings regarding music technique - in the perspective of the time that has passed from 18th c. classicism to the last decades of the 20th century, when the harmonic supports and rules that were once set by composers like Haydn and Mozart were finally rejected. Tutev's aim was to make a dialogue with that long-passed time and its aesthetics. His "longings" lead the listener to the spiritual world of the composer, who longs for the lost harmony between Man and Nature, between mankind itself. The composition of Calvinomuosaik is very original. This is one of the last pieces of Georgi Tutev. It was written on commission of the German Radio, Cologne and the composer's inspiration for writing it came from the novel "The Invisible Cities" by the Italian writer Italo Calvino.

GEORGI MINTCHEV - COMPOSITIONS

GEORGI MINTCHEV - COMPOSITIONS
ID: GD204
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection: Orchestral Works
Subcollection: Orchestra

The compositions presented in this programme were created during the 90ies of the last century and illustrate the composer's sensitivity and confession. His messages to the public are emotional, especially as far as Fahrenheit 451 Symphonic Suite from the Ballet is concerned. The other work is SentiMetal Concerto for Violoncello and Orchestra, one of the composer's most outspokenly lyrical works. A little sentiment, a little metal, this is an explanation, characteristic of the author's paradoxical thinking and sense of humour. This work, commissioned by the Dutch Radio NOS expresses the author's evolution in style, his sound and timbre diversity, virtuosity, dynamics, and fantasy.

Soloist: Michael Muller (violoncello)
Radio Symphony Orchestra NOS (Holland), Bulgarian National Radio Symphony Orchestra
Conductors: Micha Hamel, Milen Natchev

CONTEMPORARY BULGARIAN COMPOSERS - Vol. 2

CONTEMPORARY BULGARIAN COMPOSERS - Vol. 2
ID: GD252
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection: Orchestral Works
Subcollection: Orchestra

The second CD of the series presenting the contemporary Bulgarian composers, project of the Soros Center for the Arts, includes music by five representatives of three generations of tonal masters. Their compositions demonstrate a rich palette of ideas and aesthetic preferences, so characteristic of the Bulgarian school from the last three decades of the 20th century. Alexander Tanev, known for his excellent choral works and cantatas, often combines in his symphonic works academic principles of construction with the most modern resources of our century, while the younger Alexander Kandov looks for a new expressiveness and has directed himself to original themes in his symphonic works. Simeon Pironkoff's Night Music is among the author's most representative and bright opuses, appealing to the listener with the refined sound and elegant melodic line. The same can be said about the Fantasia by Plamen Djouroff, a prominent Bulgarian composer and conductor. Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Haendel are representative of Krassimir Kyurkchiiski's art of composing. The author demonstrates his mastery of handling the Baroque forms, introducing in them the outlook and interpretation of a contemporary musician.
