BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Jac van Steen

The first release from the BBC National Orchestra of Wales’s inaugural Composer in Residence, Guto Pryderi Puw. Puw studied composition with composers John Pickard, Andrew Lewis and Pwyll ap Siôn. He first made an impact as a composer in 1995 when he won the Composer's Medal at the National Eisteddfod (and again in 1997). Since then he has received many commissions and performances while being much in demand as a composer at various festivals in the UK and abroad. His music is regularly broadcast on radio and television. He is the Chairman and Artistic Director of the Bangor New Music Festival, which has been running since 2000.

In 2005 his orchestral work, a BBC Radio 3 commission, 'Reservoirs', was nominated in the Large-Scale Composition category of the Royal Philharmonic Society Music Awards, and in February 2006 he was appointed as the first Resident Composer with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales to compose three new orchestral commissions. His 'Concerto for Oboe' won the BBC Radio 3 'Listeners Award' category at the 2007 British Composer Awards and the Proms commissioned piece '...unless I open the door...' won BBC Music Magazine's 'Best Proms Premiere' for its performance in 2007. In 2010 he won an award from the Thomas Ellis Memorial Fund to record his orchestral music on the Signum label. He is currently working on a concerto for violinist Madeleine Mitchell for 2014 and his opera Y Tŵr (‘The Tower’) commissioned by Music Theatre Wales for 2016.

A dual-language release in both Welsh and English, this release features a range of orchestral works inspired by stories and landscapes of Wales.

DVD Extra: Thomas Adès and Tal Rosner in conversation

The London Sinfonietta combine two works from Thomas Adès, one of the most distinctive and popular voices in modern composition. Both works feature accompanying films (by Tal Rosner and Sophie Clements) that are included in this CD/DVD set. This is the second CD for the London Sinfonietta with Signum. It follows their October release of music by Louis Andriessen, featuring the UK premiere of Anaïs Nin, alongside his famed work De Staat.

In Seven Days is a musical interpretation for piano and orchestra of the biblical ‘creation’ by Thomas Adès, composed in collaboration with a film-piece by the artist and filmmaker Tal Rosner. Both music and film evoke the processes of the creation rather than the objects described in the movement titles, using simple elements in repeated and evolving contexts in a perpetual state of flux, change and growth.

The Piano Studies Nos 6 & 7 are arrangements of player-piano works by the American composer Conlon Nancarrow. An influential figure to generations of composers, Nancarrow’s studies for the player-piano (or pianola) allowed him to generate music of extreme rhythmic complexity in a multitude of inventive ways. These arrangements for two pianos by Thomas Adès capture the strange magic of the originals, where fragmented musical ideas are played off against each other in a wild, almost jazz-like way. The works are accompanied by film-visualisations by Tal Rosner and Sophie Clements.

Olga Neuwirth 's faible for grotesque themes and her occasional vegetative proliferation of pieces ensured her a permanent place in the repertoire. As brilliant growths of an undomesticated artist.
Many-facetted, vigorously arranged scores with the most heterogeneous influences and styles, far remote from any of the false glamour characteristic of postmodernity. With the conductor Pierre Boulez she has found herself a genuine ally. (Wolfgang Fuhrmann)

Siddhartha: Inspired by the short story Siddhartha (1922) by Hermann Hesse, this work by Claude Vivier was commissioned by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation hut could not, for various reasons, be premiered as scheduled in 1976 by the National Youth Orchestra of Canada under the direction of Marius Constant. The Canadian conductor and composer Walter Boudreau, who conducted the first performance in I986, has supplied the following commentary on the work. “Siddhartha probably represents the most revealing musical testament of Claude Vivier‘s thought and, from a formal point of view, it is also his most successfiil work. lt is direct, perfectly sculpted music that begins with a simple melody and broadens marvellously into a fantastic galaxy of ideas and emotions. “It is very sensitive music as well. The composer listens intently to his creative self and communicates his total being to us with disarming simplicity. “Finally, it is self-reflective music that feeds on its own substance in order to expand. Siddhartha is a living organism, a kind of cosmic child haunted by the idea of death and the infinite.“ (Jaco Mijnheer)

GEORG FRIEDRICH HAAS - in vain - Klangforum Wien - Sylvain Cambreling

GEORG FRIEDRICH HAAS - in vain - Klangforum Wien - Sylvain Cambreling

When the light gradually fades, only minutes after in vain begins, the quick, interlaced downward lines starting from the outset cease, while soft, lying tones remain, dodging each other by way of quarter-tone intervals. As in Violinkonzert, two harmonic starting points are contrasted: on the one hand, extracts of pure overtone series, on the other hand, chords in the tempered piano mood made of thirds, fourths, and fifths. The difference between these two tone system blurs after the end of the second dark phase with a renewed acceleration of the tempo in the increasing density of the sound. The hearing experience of the overall sound is decisive for Haas:"I don't trust in sound analyses nor in row charts", he explains, examining the detailed computer analyses of real sounds. Georg Friedrich Haas really has a bent for numbers; the implicit symbolism of numbers in in vain applies even to the relation between the size of orchestration (24 instruments in the dark, plus the director in the light) and the microtonal 24:25 interval. José Manuel López López, a composer with many long years of experience, stands out by virtue of his mature style of writing and the consistent way in which he adapts what he writes to the sound which he intends to produce. Since composing his initial musical works during the 1980s, his development has led from atonality to spectralism and, from there, on to experimentation with various temporal granulations. This CD brings together three symphonic works with solo instruments that exemplify this development. Written in the period between 1995 and 2005, they represent three distinctly different contributions to the contemporary orchestral repertoire.

RAMON LAZKANO - Hauskor

RAMON LAZKANO - Hauskor
ID: KAI0012992

Type: CD
Subcollection: Orchestra

Hauskor
In Basque the word Hauskor refers to that which potentially has the quality of breaking itself up into dust thanks to the inner dynamism of the material after which it is named. Thus comes the initial idea of the piece: eight cellists who, because of their new position in space, dim and blur the orchestral convention, trickling what seemed to be a homogeneous group into separate voices which end up confronting the wholeness from which they spring. It is the threshold of a conflict, and over this threshold leans and balances itself what could be alluded to as the production of sounds.

Ortzi Isilak
Ramon Lazkano took two quotations from Nietzsche as the thought and the expression of the sound environment from which the musical idea slowly emerges. These two references may be read philosophically and artistically but can also plainly allude to a certain figurative affinity with the contents of the work.

Ilunkor
The five linked up sections of Ilunkor seek after the mineral and earthly ideas which were at the onset of their being designed. Carving sounds, creating volumes and crests out of silence, saturating harmony and carrying dynamics and ranges to extremes, conceiving shape as a maze of breakings and windows and time as an expanded dimension…
