This outstanding musician is well-known and loved across the world. A violinist, educator, conductor, founder and permanent leader of the chamber orchestra Moscow Virtuosi and the National Symphony Orchestra of Russia, an organizer of the charity trust that supports talented children, a director of international music festivals both in Russia and overseas, a jury member of a number of violin competitions, and the president of the Moscow International House of Music. Maestro Spivakov’s artistic and social activities only broaden through the years - he performs all over the world, renews his violin and conducting repertoire playing with some of the best soloists and conductors.
The 5-CD set features Vladimir Spivakov as both a violinist and conductor on recordings made in 1970s to 1990s. That period of performing activity and creation of the Moscow Virtuosi was a bright phase in the maestro’s career leaving an unforgettable trace in performing arts of this country and the world. The chamber pieces by Schubert, Locatelli, Franck, Debussy, Ravel, Milhaud, Bartók and Prokofiev, and virtuosic numbers by Paganini, Wieniawski and Saint-Saëns were recorded with remarkable pianists such as Viktoria Postnikova and Boris Bekhterev; one of the CDs is dedicated to Mozart (Symphony No. 28 and the Coronation Mass) while another is dedicated to Rodion Shchedrin (Carmen Suite and also Music for the Town of Köthen written especially for Spivakov).
Spivakov’s earlier unreleased concert recordings at the 4th International Tchaikovsky Competition in 1970 are of particular interest. The violinist was awarded the second prize and a silver medal at the competition for his performance of Sibelius’s and Tchaikovsky’s violin concertos, and Tchaikovsky’s, Sarasate’s and Shchedrin’s pieces.

Firma Melodiya presents an album of classical Russian romances performed by Elena Zaremba.

One of the best Russian mezzo-sopranos of her generation, the singer began her career at the Bolshoi Theatre of the USSR in the mid-1980s. She conquered the world of opera, performing at some of the best theatre and festival venues with Russian, Italian, French and German repertoire and taking part in productions with prominent soloists and conductors. Only recently has she turned to chamber vocal music for the first time.

Russian romance is a special genre demanding not only professional skills. Stage and life experience, a subtle sensation of music and poetry, complete understanding between a singer and an accompanist - all this is needed to fully grasp this sphere of vocal art. Elena Zaremba’s performances with chamber programmes confirm that romance is not respite from the operatic stage for her but a new step in her vocal and dramatic career.

The album covers a hundred years of the evolution of Russian romance - Glinka, Dargomyzhsky, Rubinstein, Cui, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov, Medtner.

This programme was born through collaboration with Antonina Kadobnova, a remarkable pianist and concertmaster. A prize-winner of international competitions, she is very active as both a solo performer and accompanist, performing with well-known and young vocalists.

These recordings of Russian romances were made by Elena Zaremba and Antonina Kadobnova in 2011.

Firma Melodiya presents a boxed set dedicated to the 75th anniversary of one of the outstanding contemporary Russian conductors, Dmitri Kitayenko.

“Today he can be undoubtedly considered one of the five or six best conductors of the world. This phenomenon is out of the ordinary”, Herbert von Karajan wrote about Kitayenko after the young Soviet conductor gave a brilliant performance at the international competition in Vienna, receiving the second prize and winning the hearts of the Viennese audience and media. Evgeny Svetlanov also greeted his younger colleague on the pages of the Soviet press as a talented and promising conductor.

A graduate of the Leningrad Conservatory who also completed a postgraduate course at the Moscow Conservatory and a training course at the Vienna Academy of Music, Dmitri Kitayenko had a brilliant start to his conducting career. From 1976 to 1990 he headed the Academic Symphony Orchestra of the Moscow Philharmonic Society. Under his leadership the celebrated orchestra substantially expanded its repertoire and actively toured.

During recent decades, the conductor worked with the orchestras of Western Europe, Japan, South Korea and the United States and regularly recorded.

This 6 CD set includes recordings made by Dmitri Kitayenko in the studio and in the concert hall between 1975 and 1987 with the orchestra of the Moscow Philharmonic Society and the USSR State Academic Symphony Orchestra. The repertoire included showcases the conductor’s stylistic diversity and highest mastery.

BOX set
Firma Melodiya presents a boxed set titled “International Tchaikovsky Competition. Phonographic Documents (1958-1986)”.
The first ever Soviet music tournament instantly became one of the world’s most prestigious competitions. The piano jury was chaired by Emil Gilels for many years, while David Oistrakh and Mstislav Rostropovich headed the violin and cello juries, respectively. Alexander Sveshnikov, an outstanding choirmaster and chancellor of the Moscow Conservatory, was a chairman of the vocal jury. For the fifty years of its existence, the Tchaikovsky Competition discovered numerous distinguished performers such as Van Cliburn, Vladimir Ashkenasi, Grigory Sokolov, Eliso Virsaladze, John Lill, Michail Pletnev, Viktor Tretiakov, Gidon Kremer, Vladimir Spivakov, Oleg Kagan, Natalia Gutman, Elena Obraztsova, Maria Gulegina, Vladimir Atlantov, Yevgeny Nesterenko and Paata Burchuladze to name but a few. The set captures the brightest moments of eight Tchaikovsky Competitions in all categories. The recordings, including a number of never-before-released ones, were made immediately during the competition auditions
and at the prize-winners’ recitals. The release is dedicated to the 175th anniversary of the great Russian composer.

1986, 1990.

Firma Melodiya presents a complete collection of romances and songs by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky timed to the great Russian composer’s 175th anniversary.
“As a matter of fact, poetry and music are so close to each other,” Tchaikovsky wrote to Nadezhda von Meck. Chamber vocal music has a very special place
in the extensive legacy of the composer who was a symphonist of genius, a creator of operatic and ballet masterpieces, and a prominent master of the concerto genre. It accompanied Tchaikovsky throughout his artistic life being his “lyrical diary” and at the same time an creative laboratory where he sought for and found images for his very different works. The 17-year-old student of the Imperial School of Jurisprudence started off his composing career with
timid attempts to set poetic texts to music. In the romances of Op. 6, the composer appears as a mature master, while the numerous vocal pieces of the 1870s anticipate the artistic imagery and musical drama of Eugene Onegin. Op. 73, the composer’s last chamber vocal work, which immediately preceded the writing of the Sixth Symphony (Pathétique), is surprisingly similar to the symphony in terms of images and emotions. The set features all of the composer’s 103 romances for voice and piano, including rare cycles such as 16
Songs for Children, Op. 54, and 6 romances after French poets, Op. 65. The recordings were made on Firma Melodiya in the 1960s to 1980s as part of
a grandiose project of complete recorded collection of Tchaikovsky’s works. It involved the talents of the best Soviet vocalists such as Zara Dolukhanova, Irina
Arkhipova, Elena Obraztsova, Tamara Milashkina, Sergei Lemeshev, Ivan Petrov, Yuri Mazurok, Muslim Magomaev and other singers/soloists of the USSR Bolshoi Theatre and All-Union Radio.

Zurab Anjaparidze - Arias and Scenes from Operas
ID: MELCD1002373
Disk: 1
Type: CD

Firma Melodiya presents recordings of the prominent singer and soloist of the USSR Bolshoi Theatre Zurab Anjaparidze.

“For eleven years of his career on the stage of the USSR Bolshoi Theatre he was … the best Herman, the best Radames, the best José. Whatever the singer undertook, he created, and id it in a thorough, unhurriedly, with a sense of enormous responsibility and his own artistic dignity.” This is how the outstanding Irina Arkhipova described the performing art of Zurab Anjaparidze who was one her perennial partners at the Bolshoi Theatre.

Thousands of spectators and listeners could not help but agree to her appraisal. Anjaparidze’s voice preserved on tape still resonates with the beauty of its sound, wealth of its timbre with an inimitable Italian flavour, emotional fullness of every character he went through. Zurab Anjaparidze debuted at the Bolshoi as José in Bizet’s Carmen in 1957. Along with the part of Radames in Verdi’s Aida, that role became Anjaparidze’s trademark, and soon the singer took the place of the leading heroic tenor of the opera company.

The role of Herman in Tchaikovsky’s Queen of Spades was the artist’s highest accomplishment at the Bolshoi. He also sang Herman on the Bolshoi’s tour at La Scala in 1964. After that making the Italian press dubbed him the “Soviet Franco Corelli.” The album includes fragments from the operas performed by Zurab Anjaparidze - The Queen of Spades, Carmen, Aida, as well as Verdi’s Il Trovatore and Otello, Puccini’s Tosca and Manon Lescaut, Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore and Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci. The recordings were made in the 1960s and 1970s with the orchestra of the USSR Bolshoi Theatre conducted by Alexander Melik-Pashayev, Boris Khaikin and Mark Ermler.

Firma Melodiya presents never-before-released recordings of András Schiff made at the V Tchaikovsky International Competition in 1974.

One of the most prominent pianists of modern times, András Schiff is nevertheless does not belong to the so-called competition format. The musician who earned the pedestal of philosopher pianist, “a representative of intellectual musical tradition in its high apprehension,” has never had virtuosity, sonic lustre and visual artistry in his sphere of interests.

However, the live recordings of the then 21-year-old Hungarian are of unquestionable interest. Soviet music critic Leonid Gakkel described his impressions of Schiff’s performance in the following way: “From his very first note at the competition Schiff struck me with the vigour of his performance, and that was vigour of the highest festivity… What a touch on the piano, what a charge of energy, what burning fingers! Ultimate activity of a creating spirit at each moment of playing…”

At the competition, Schiff played piano works by Rachmaninoff, Liszt, Prokofiev and Shostakovich, variation cycles and concertos by Tchaikovsky and Brahms. In the opinion of Yevgeny Malinin, a competent judge and professor of the Moscow Conservatory, Schiff “read music without a drop of wilfulness: he lived in and with it.” The panel gave him only the fourth prize (“incomplete correspondence” with general virtuosity and competition standards had an impact). However, it wouldn’t be an overstatement to say that it was the Tchaikovsky Competition that brought the first significant success and international repute to the outstanding pianist.
