The name of the programme comes from Bela Bartok's cycle of miniatures Out of Doors, performed by the young pianist Anna Stoytcheva (b. 1974). She began her piano studies in Bulgaria and after that received her Bachelor of Music and Master of Music Degrees from the Juilliard School. Her international career started in 1991 when she became winner of the Ettore Pozzolo International Piano Competition in Italy. Her recognition in the USA began with the Ravel Concerto Piano Competition. Since then she has been characterized as an artist of strong individuality, remarkable sensitivity and a sense for the development and trends of music. Her interpretation of Debussy's Images places her among the pianists who have left their own mark in interpreting the composer's impressionistic visions. Anna Stoytcheva is inspired by the originality of Bartok's miniatures and she transforms every piano piece into an emotionally depicted picture with its specific colour. The Bulgarian violist Dimitar Penkov, who has lived in Germany for a number of years, again presents an interesting program. For his two previous CDs on the Gega New label he recorded Jean-Marie Leclaire’s 6 sonatas for two violas, performed together with Johannes Flieder (GD 212) and the concertos for viola and orchestra by Krzysztof Penderecki and Karl Stamitz (GD 250). The present program features two concertos, which are representative of the music of the 20th century. Both works were written at the end of the composers’ lives and both were dedicated to legendary violists - Bartok wrote his concerto commissioned by William Primrose, while Schnittke kept a promise he had given Juri Bashmet nine years earlier. The premieres of the works were outstanding events among music circles at that time. Dimitar Penkov continuously proves his skill at performing difficult works. His interpretation of the Honegger sonata for viola and piano was the first studio recording of this work. He also performed the French premiere of Penderecki’s viola concerto. During his career Dimitar Penkov has performed under the batons of such notable conductors as Aldo Cecatto, Pierre Bartholomee, Vassil Stefanov, Vassil Kazandjiev, Lutz Herbig, Gilbert Varga, Konstantin Iliev, Anthony Bramall, Michael Tabachnik, Nikos Athineos, Otmar Maga, and Plamen Djouroff. He has realized numerous recordings for the radios of Paris, Sofia, Zurich, and Hannover. Two films produced by Bulgarian National Television document the instrumental art of Dimitar Penkov. The conductor Nikos Athineos studied at the Athens Conservatory, the Cologne Hochschule fur Musik and the Robert Schumann Institute in Dusseldorf. He has toured throughout Germany, Spain, Russia, Lithuania, Israel, France, Belgium and the Netherlands. As a guest conductor he has appeared with various major European orchestras such as the Philharmonia Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of London, the English Chamber Orchestra, the Sinfonia Varsovia, the Prague Gustav Mahler Orchestra, the Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra and the Symphony Orchestra of the Bulgarian National Radio. The Bulgarian National Radio Symphony Orchestra is one of Bulgaria’s oldest and most respected ensembles. The orchestra was founded by its chief conductor of more than thirty years, Vassil Stefanov. Other chief conductors have included Alexander Vladigerov, Vassil Kazandjiev, Ruslan Raichev, Milen Nachev. The orchestra is now led by Rossen Milanov. |

Voland Quartet presents a very interesting program. The works included were created during the last 70 years and they show some trends in the development of 20th and 21st century music. Of special interest is the combination of two pianos with the timbre variety of the different percussion instruments. The four musicians are renowned solo performers, but in the present recordings they have achieved an amazing ensemble performance.
Ivo Varbanov was born in Bulgaria and received his music education in Italy and the UK, having studied with famous piano teachers. He has performed in important venues such as Wigmore Hall, South Bank Centre, S. John’s Smiths Square in London, Carnegie Hall in New York, and Bulgaria Concert Hall in Sofia. Gega New has published two CDs of the musician: the first one containing works for piano by Mussorgsky (GD 117) and the second - works for cello and piano by Pizzetti, recorded together with the cello player Seeli Toivio (GD 275).
Michal Drewnowski studied the piano with Ewa Poblocka in Warsaw and later on with his father, the well known Polish pianist Marek Drewnowski. He has played extensively as a soloist and chamber musician in most of the European countries in important festivals and venues. He has particular affinity to19th and 20th century music, which is evident in his performance in this program.
Christo Yotzov graduated at the State Academy of Music in Sofia with Dobri Paliev. In 1985, he founded Acoustic Version with Antony Donchev and since then has won many prestigious awards at European jazz festivals. He has performed all over the world with Acoustic Version and also with other artists such as Tommy Smith, Andy Scofield, Milcho Leviev, Alexia, Reiner Winterschlagen, Yildiz Ibrahimova, and Adam Pierontchik. He has recorded more than 20 LPs and CDs. This is his first classical music CD.
Radosvet (Eti) Kukudov also studied at the State Academy of Music in Sofia completing his Master Degree with Dobri Paliev. He is a laureate of all national competitions for percussion instruments and chamber music. As a timpanist of the Bulgarian National Radio Symphony Orchestra, he has toured extensively Germany, Spain, Italy, France, Switzerland, Greece, and Turkey. He has also recorded as a chamber musician works by contemporary Bulgarian composers. |

The young performers Georgy Valtchev and Lora Tchekoratova present an interesting programme with works by Bartok.
Born in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, Georgy Valtchev studied the violin under Boyanka Shopova, Vladimir Vladigerov, Mitcho Dimitrov and Prof. Dora Ivanova. In the United States he continues his studies at the Julliard School as a student of Dorothy Delay and Masao Kawasaki. He achieved his first international success at age sixteen when he won the Grand Prize of the "Kocian" International Violin Competition in then Czechoslovakia. He has been honoured with a number of awards, among them the First Prize of the Ducrest International Competition in Lafayette, Louisiana, and the Special Prize of the Tibor Varga International Violin Competition in Switzerland.
Lora Tchekoratova began her piano studies in Sofia as a pupil of the legendary piano pedagogue Lydia Kuteva. Later she studied with Vessela Marinova and Prof. Jenny Zaharieva. In 1992, she moved to the United States and become the first Bulgarian musician to hold a Doctorate from Juilliard as a student of Seymour Lipkin. She won numerous awards at international competitions, including the first prize of the 1996 Washington International Competition for Pianists. Her solo debut was at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.
Although they perform as soloists on their own, Lora Tchekoratova and Georgy Valtchev often appear together in performances in the USA and in many countries throughout Europe and Asia. Along with the traditional repertoire for violin and piano, they also perform works by 20th century composers.

Belina Kostadinova finished the Music School in Bourgas and graduated at the Academy of Music in Sofia. She continued her studies in Basle and Zurich (Switzerland). Her teachers there were Rudolf Buchbinder, Gerard Wyss and Homero Francesch. She has attended master classes of Alexis Weissenberg, Rudolf Buchbinder, and Paul Badura-Skoda. She has also won international prizes at the competitions of "Obretenov" and "Nenov" in Bulgaria; "The Salerno International Piano Competition" in Italy; the "Duttweiler-Hug" Prize in Switzerland.
In addition to Switzerland, which is Belina’s home base, she has performed in Bulgaria, Germany, France, Italy, Spain and the United States both as a recitalist and with orchestras. She also performs frequently as a chamber musician, playing with the Trio "Latitude", and with several singers and instrumentalists. |
