"Richter is a pianist of surprising internal concentration. At times it seems the whole process of musical performance takes place inside him," wrote a foreign reviewer. Firma Melodiya offers its listeners a set of recordings by the great pianist of the 20th century Sviatoslav Richter, which reflects his diverse performing interests. The history of piano music does not seem to know any time intervals, ages or schools that Richter left outside his pianistic orbit. Bach, Scarlatti, Viennese classics, Romanticism with all of its contradictory sides, French impressionism, the entire palette of Russian music of the 19th and 20th centuries, his contemporaries - Prokofiev, Shostakovich, Bartók… For each individuality and for any style, he would build a convincing interpretation following the highest synthesis of "ratio" and "emotio", in which his unsurpassed technical mastery remained almost unnoticed. Firma Melodiya presents a complete set of recordings of Frédéric Chopin's mazurkas performed by Yakov Flier.
Chopin's mazurkas are an inexhaustible wealth of images and moods, which is attractive for both a not that knowledgeable lover of music and a sophisticated connoisseur. Images of a distant and dear homeland, lyrical contemplation, a gross folk dance, poetic sketches, the rustle of ballroom gowns and the rattle of spurs - Chopin put his whole soul, inspired fantasy and artistic skills into these miniatures, many of which are as deep and serious as his sonatas and ballads. A lot of pianists included Chopin's mazurkas in their repertoire, but only few of them had the courage to play them all.
Yakov Flier was one of the most prominent representatives of the Soviet pianistic school and a successor of the Russian Chopinists' tradition. A performer and professor who educated a whole galaxy of bright students, Flier combined romantic spirituality with classical commensurateness, virtuosic freedom with a genuine artistic prowess. Chopin's mazurkas became Yakov Flier's last recording, his swan song where the artist achieve a new degree of musical depth, bright figurativeness and fine realization of "chamber' romantic pianism. |

Frédéric Chopin’s etudes are a unique combination of virtuoso technique and artistic supertasks. It is not without reason that no compulsory programme of any international competition can do without them. Each of the etudes is an ‘exercise’ in one of the types of piano technique, while sounding like a bright and image-bearing piece.
The twelve etudes of Op.10 were composed during 1828-1832 and dedicated to Franz Liszt. The twelve etudes of Op.25 were published in 1836. Nearly all pianists of the world have Chopin’s etudes in their repertoire, but only a few of them have the courage to play both of the opuses in their entirety.
Firma Melodiya presents twenty-four etudes by Chopin performed by Vladimir Ashkenazy, one of the greatest pianists of modern times. What makes these recordings especially interesting is that they were made in 1959 by the then 22-year-old pianist. With his world triumphs still ahead (although Ashkenazy had received a second prize at the International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw and won the prestigious Queen Elisabeth Music Competition in Brussels), Ashkenazy’s pianism already appears in full possession of virtuosic and artistic mastery.
“The young pianist is not just an owner of phenomenally deft, strong and superbly trained fingers, he also proficiently wields a diverse and beautiful palette of piano sounds”, wrote one of the reviewers in those days.

Firma Melodiya continues the series of compact discs dedicated to the December Evenings Festival that takes place at the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts. This album, like the previous one, is dedicated to the 1985 festival 'World of Romanticism' and includes recordings featuring Sviatoslav Richter.
The atmosphere of December Evenings, an event initiated by the great pianist, differed from usual philharmonic concerts. The spirit of music as an inseparable part of the 'fusion of arts' the romanticists dreamt of was invisibly felt in each number; a sensitive listener can catch it in these, perhaps technically imperfect, concert recordings from thirty years ago.
The works by Schubert, Schumann and Chopin were performed by Sviatoslav Richter in ensemble with his outstanding contemporaries, violinist and David Oistrakh’s student Oleg Kogan who passed away prematurely, violist Yuri Bashmet, cellist Natalia Gutman and clarinettist Anatoly Kamyshov.
Along with popular compositions (Chopin’s Polonaise-fantaisie, Ballade and Cello Sonata, and Schubert’s Sonata for violin and piano), the programme featured works which were less known to the audience - Schumann’s Piano Trio, his late opuses Fairy Tale Pictures, Op.113 for viola and piano and Fantasy Pieces, Op.73, in their original version for clarinet and piano.

Firma Melodiya presents a set of romantic piano music performed by Vazgen Vartanian.
Vazgen Vartanian is one of the brightest representatives of the new generation of the Russian pianistic school. A graduate of the Moscow Conservatory, he has also studied at the Julliard School in New York where he was conferred the degree of Master of Fine Arts.
At different times, Vartanian was a pupil of such famous masters as Lev Vlassenko, Dmitri Sakharov, Andrey Pisarev and Jerome Lowenthal.
The geography of the pianist’s concerts is vast - he has played at some of the best venues of the world, including Lincoln Center in New York, USA, the Tonhalle in Zurich, Switzerland, the Verdi Milan Conservatoire in Italy, the Seoul Arts Centre in South Korea, and others.
This release features three concert programmes by Vazgen Vartanian, performed at the Big and Small Halls of the Moscow Conservatory, as well as at the concert hall of the Russian Gnessin Music Academy in 2010 and 2011, and dedicated to the 200th anniversaries of three great composers of the romantic period - Frédéric Chopin, Robert Schumann and Franz Liszt.

Firma Melodiya and the Andrei Konchalovsky Foundation present a unique set dedicated to the outstanding Russian pianist of the 20th century Vladimir Sofronitsky. Sofronitsky who tolerated no clichés strongly objected to the reputation of a Scriabinist although he found his own inimitable key to Scriabin's music at an early age. Those who had a chance to hear the composer play said that only Sofronitsky was congenial to Scriabin's interpretations. With a hostile attitude to studio work, the pianist felt truly free only in concert. He was able to perform the same piece differently even just a few days later. Every time Sofronitsky played, he re-experienced music, let it through himself as if he confessed before the audience. Perhaps that was the main secret of his magical impact. Many of the remaining concert recordings still preserve that sensation. Five of six discs include recordings made at Vladimir Sofronitsky's recitals in 1951 to 1960, including works of Scriabin, Schumann, Chopin, Schubert, Liszt, Mozart, Rachmaninoff, Lyadov, Debussy, Prokofiev and Shostakovich. The sixth disc of the set includes a documentary on Vladimir Sofronitsky filmed by the outstanding contemporary director Andrei Konchalovsky.

The first ever Soviet music tournament instantly became one of the world’s most prestigious competitions. The piano jury was chaired by Emil Gilels for many years, while David Oistrakh and Mstislav Rostropovich headed the violin and cello juries, respectively. Alexander Sveshnikov, an outstanding choirmaster and chancellor of the Moscow Conservatory, was a chairman of the vocal jury. For the fifty years of its existence, the Tchaikovsky Competition discovered numerous distinguished performers such as Van Cliburn, Vladimir Ashkenasi, Grigory Sokolov, Eliso Virsaladze, John Lill, Michail Pletnev, Viktor Tretiakov, Gidon Kremer, Vladimir Spivakov, Oleg Kagan, Natalia Gutman, Elena Obraztsova, Maria Gulegina, Vladimir Atlantov, Yevgeny Nesterenko and Paata Burchuladze to name but a few.
