Lubotsky Trio: Mark Lubotsky (violin), Ferdinand Erblich (viola), Olga Dowbusch-Lubotsky (cello)

Firma Melodiya presents a rarity of Russian chamber music, string quartets by Sergei Taneyev performed by Lubotsky Trio. In the early 20th century, they called Taneyev “musical conscience of Moscow.” Tchaikovsky’s best student and friend, the first recipient of the Big Gold Medal of the Moscow Conservatory, and a teacher of Rachmaninoff, Scriabin and other famous composers, Taneyev proved to be an outstanding pianist, composer, educator and music theorist.
A true master of polyphonic composition and a fine ensemble performer, Taneyev devoted special attention to thematic development, vibrant voiceleading, subtle palette of strokes, and sought to find an ideal balance between emotional and rational in music. The chamber and instrumental genres were perhaps the ones that answered his artistic demands to the greatest extent.
Two string trios - E flat major, Op. 31, and B minor (no opus) - on this album belong to the 1910’s, the last period of Taneyev’s life. The latter one remained unfinished and was published many years after the composer’s death.
Taneyev’s trios are performed by Mark Lubotsky, a remarkable violinist and representative of the Russian performing school, and his trio composed of Mark Lubotsky, German violist Ferdinand Erblich and cellist Olga Dowbusch-Lubotsky. A graduate of the Moscow Conservatory, a student of Abram Yampolsky and David Oistrakh, and a prize-winner of the 1st Tchaikovsky International Competition in 1958, Mark Lubotsky now resides in Germany and still combines his performing career with teaching.
The recording was made in Germany in 2015, the year of the 100th anniversary of the prominent Russian composer’s death.

Firma Melodiya presents recordings of 20th century cello music performed by Oleg Vedernikov and Alexey Goribol.
The name of Alexey Goribol, a pianist, public figure, Honoured Artist of Russia and organizer of numerous festivals and music projects is well known to the domestic and foreign listeners, while the name of Oleg Vedernikov whose life ended up so tragically in 2015 is less known to a wide audience. This album is dedicated to the memory of the remarkable cellist.
A graduate of the Ural Conservatory in Sverdlovsk (now Yekaterinburg), Oleg Vedernikov won a silver medal of the 2nd All-Union cello Competition in Yaroslavl in 1988. Then he took a graduate course at the Moscow Conservatory with Natalia Shakhovskaya and was one of her favourite students. Together with Alexey Goribol Vedernikov won the first prize at the chamber competition in Trapani, Italy.
This recording was made in 1993 when Oleg Vedernikov’s performance, in his peers’ opinion, was on top of cello art. The cellist and the pianist make a brilliant ensemble unveiling the entire contradiction and figurative wealth of contemporary music. It was the first joint work to both of the musicians, and it was followed by many years of fruitful artistic partnership.
The album features cello sonatas by Dmitri Shostakovich and Alfred Schnittke, and works by Leonid Desyatnikov and Rodion Shchedrin.

SOFFREN DEGEN

SOFFREN DEGEN
ID: E117
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection: Chamber Music
Subcollection: Cello and Guitar

Danish composer Søffren Degen's greatest contribution to the guitar repertoire is to be found in his original compositions and transcriptions for cello and guitar, the only known major collection of compositions and transcriptions for the two instruments. Soffren Degen was born in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1816. His introduction to music came through his stepfather Andreas Hallager who was a professional composer, conductor and oboe player. Andreas Hallager also had a strong affection for the guitar. Degen gave his first public performance as a 13-year-old student at the conservatory. The young Soffren Degen considered the guitar as his primary study, but the conservatory did not accept the guitar as a serious instrument for students, so Degen was trained as a cellist and composer. Degen’s compositions are well crafted and written in highly romantic style, often program music, and nearly always in a large scale form. This recording marks another collaboration between British cellist Michael Kevin Jones and Spanish guitarist Agustin Maruri, who continue to enjoy a very active concert and recording career both individually and as a duo.

Schubert's 'Wanderer Fantasy' and Schumann's 'Fantasie' are two highly remarkable works: whilst musically embodying the romantic spirit of the age in their unconventional structures and lyrically imaginative styles, they also act as self-portraits to their creators through the evocation of the creative process.
In these new orchestrations by Joeseph James, the familiar beauty of the works is rekindled in the exciting and fresh interpretations performed by the illustrious English Chamber Orchestra alongside concertante solos from members of the Schubert Ensemble. The performances are directed by the exceptional young conductor, Orlando Jopling.
Featured instrumentalists from the Schubert Ensemble include Simon Blendis (violin), Jane Salmon (cello), Peter Buckoke and Stephen Williams (double basses).
