Collection: Organ Collection Subcollection: Organ In keeping with the historic nature of the Temple Church, the first mention of an organ there dates back to 1308 - although the organ on this recording, made by Harrison & Harrison, dates from 1954 (after the previous organ was destroyed during the blitz in 1941).
The varied programme touches on a multitude of works for organ by English composers, all of which bring out different facets of this versatile instrument. The organist, James Vivian, has been part of the music department at the Temple Church since 1997, working first with the then director of music Stephen Layton before taking on the role himself in 2006.
Including works by Percy Whitlock, Henry Walford Davies, John Stanley, Samuel Sebastian Wesley, Frank Bridge, Basil Harwood, Francis Jackson and Herbert Howells.
This disc is complemented by the release The Temple Church Choir's 'The Majesty of Thy Glory': Choral Works by Britten, Elgar, Howells and Purcell, also released this month. |

Collection: Chamber Music Subcollection: Cello A close brush with his own mortality eighteen months ago was the driving force behind Mike Sheppard's decision to focus solely on his composing, putting aside his other commercial interests as a music publisher and producer. The Soul Rests Eternal marks the first fruits of this new direction.
The works take the listener on a journey exploring the emotional landscape of grief, bereavement and loss, but also hope, optimism and a celebration of life. Seen through the twin perspectives of the composer's eyes and a more global view, the album takes an emotional journey from the immediate to the eternal; the banal to the sublime. A 'radio-friendly' collection of three to six minute works, Classic FM have confirmed playlisting for the album upon its release in November.
Performances on the disc come from internationally renowned cellist Caroline Dale and the English Chamber Orchestra, conducted by the emmy-award nominated musican Steve Sidwell.
The Soul Rests Eternal is a unique new album of powerful, emotive music that has multi-faceted depths and an interesting human-interest story at every turn. 14 new works for solo cello and orchestra take the listener on a journey exploring the emotional landscape of grief, bereavement and loss, but also hope, faith, optimism and a celebration of life.
Caroline Dale (cello soloist on Dario Marianelli’s oscar-winning score to the film ‘Atonement’) was an instinctive choice as soloist, capturing the intensely soulful voice of the cello and exploiting fully the vast range of emotions encountered here. As Principal cellist of the English Chamber Orchestra, this CD presented another opportunity for the ECO to record again on Signum Classics, following their recent recording with harpist Claire Jones.
Conceived as an arts initiative, this album breaks new ground in that it offers an inspired way for the arts, charity and business sectors to work together, in this case serving to promote the Child Bereavement Charity, with which the composer had previously been involved.
This arts/charity/business initiative sees 20% of the music publishing rights assigned to CBC. This means the charity will not only benefit from record sales, but also from live performances, radio & TV broadcasts and sheet music sales as well as whenever the music gets used in film or TV. And because the charity will own its share for life of copyright, CBC will go on benefitting for 70 years after the composer's death. The charity will also enjoy a raised profile through the publicity generated by the album. |

Subcollection: Violin A unique disc from one of Scotland's most dynamic and versatile groups - the Scottish Ensemble is a tight-knit band of outstanding string players from around Europe who perform regularly together under Artistic Director, Jonathan Morton. This disc - one of their first solo releases following acclaimed discs with artists such as Alison Balsom and Toby Spence - contrasts Vivaldi's timeless Four Seasons with Piazzolla's tango-inspired The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires.
Combining Vivaldi and Piazzola together like this underlines the meteorological and cultural differences between Mediterranean Europe and the heart of South America. To have them performed side by side creates a fascinating programme of similarities and contrasts. |

Collection: Vocal Collection Subcollection: Vocal and Piano TIain Burnside and Ailish Tynan return to Signum with their second disc of Irish Songs and arrangements - this time from a range of different 20th Century composers.
Although all of the sung texts stem from Irelands rich heritage of literature (including poems from W.B. Yeats, Thomas Moore and James Joyce), the composers featured here have a more transatlantic feel, with works by John Cage and Samuel Barber programmed alongside others by Benjamin Britten and Herbert Hughes.
This disc continues Burnside’s series of recital discs with Signum - in particular his 2007 disc with Ailish Tynan of Irish songs by Herbert Hughes, A Purse of Gold (SIGCD106):
“The word 'arrangement' as Burnside suggests, doesn't do justice to the inventive piano writing and pacing of so many of these pieces ... Soprano Ailish Tynan's feeling for the musical idiom and, above all, the poetry of her countrymen, matched by Burnside's delightfully poetic pianism, prove irresistible. Highly recommended" - 5 Stars

Collection: Chamber Music Subcollection: Chamber Ensemble Tide Harmonic is a new work for small ensemble by the contemporary British composer Joby Talbot. With a compositional aesthetic that threads through his classical and concert works, this disc was born out of a collaboration with choreographer Carolyn Carlson originally entitled Eau. A piece for small ensemble of string quartet, percussion, harp and keyboards (celesta, piano and harmonium), Tide Harmonic is described by its composer as: “… a kind of water symphony that, rather than constructing a poetic or narrative programme inspired by man’s relationship with water, instead focuses on the substance itself, the forces that act upon it, and the energy that flows through and from it”. |
