Firma Melodiya presents a recording of St Matthew Passion (2006), one of the most popular works of Russian academic music of the 21st century composed by Metropolitan Hilarion. In due course, this work will probably take a special place in the history of domestic music, but it has already been a source of inspiration for The Conductor (2012), a motion picture by Pavel Lungin, and performed over fifty times around the world.

Its composer Metropolitan Hilarion (Grigory Alfeyev) is a pries of the Russian Orthodox Church, a theologian and public figure, an author of fundamental studies on religious issues, and a Doctor of Philosophy of the University of Oxford. In 1984 to 1987 he studied at the composition department of the Moscow Conservatory under professor Alexei Nikolayev. Later he left music for an ecclesiastical career, but subsequently returned to composing.

The uniqueness of St Matthew Passion lies in the synthesis of musical traditions of West European baroque where the musical genre of passion sprang from, Orthodox church signing and Russian symphonic music of the 19th and 20th centuries. St Matthew Passion is intended for concert performance, but in the opinion of the musicologist and chancellor of the Moscow Conservatory Alexander Sokolov "this music leads a man to God through knowledge of God, to spiritual through soulful".

The featured recording was made in 2010 by the first performers of the Passion who are the Moscow Synodal Choir led by Alexei Puzakov and the Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra conducted by Vladimir Fedoseyev with the participation of young vocalists and prize-winners of international competitions Naira Asatrian, Olessya Petrova, Maxim Paster and Dmitri Beloselsky.

Firma Melodiya presents a premiere of a unique work of 20th century Russian music - 24 Preludes and Fugues by Vsevolod Zaderatsky.
To say that the composer’s fate was tragic means to say nothing. A composer, pianist and conductor, Zaderatsky went through all circles of Soviet hell - arrests, imprisonments, Gulag, exiles, persecution for “formalism”… However, nothing could crush the man’s mighty craving for creation. He wrote his main work in the period of 1937 to 1939 in a prison camp in Kolyma using telegraph forms as music paper…
A representative of Taneyev’s school, Zaderatsky was perhaps the only composer who ventured upon continuation of his teacher’s polyphonic tradition. Zaderatsky revived Bach’s tradition on his own even before Hindemith and Shostakovich created their cycles of the kind. Here, the timehonoured form is combined with a quite peculiar interpretation of “tonal” thinking. At the same time, the composer’s style is a synthesis of the most significant achievements in the music of the first half of the last century.
Vsevolod Zaderatsky’s works began to draw attention of musicians and the public as late as in the 21st century. The 24 Preludes and Fugues were performed entirely for the first time in 2014 in Moscow. Now they have been put on record by a group of young pianists, prize-winners of international competitions and prominent representatives of performing art of their generation. We are pleased to present Ksenia Bashmet, Yuri Favorin, Nikita Mndoyants, Lukas Geniušas, Andrei Gugnin and Andrei Yaroshinsky.

The author of the story, Ostrovsky, wrote “Korsakov’s music to my “The Snow Maiden” is astonishing. I could hardly imagine anything that might be more suitable and could express so lively the poetry of the ancient pagan cult and this cold as snow at first and then irrepressibly passionate heroine of the tale.”

Easiness and quickness of composing the opera were the evidence of not only Rimsky-Korsakov’s keenness on Ostrovsky’s fairy tale subject but of his maturity as composer. The opera was completed in clavier within two months and a half! The sensitive composer could catch the main idea -The Snow Maiden was not cold and heartless, without any feeling of love but she was longing to love, to be near the people, feel and experience as most of them. The author of the fairy tale A.N. Ostrovsky admired the opera. Both musicians who performed “The Snow Maiden” and audience fell in love with the opera at once; it won the composer’s heart as well. “The Snow Maiden” (a spring fairy tale), Opera in 4 Acts with the Prologue. Tolstoy’s creative works were always the subject of excitement for Prokofiev. Having dismissed the idea of composing music on the subject of the novel “Resurrection” he became enthusiastic about “War and Peace”. Eleven of thirteen scenes were written within the year. Putting aside plenty (according to his opinion) of minor details the composer concentrated his attention on two main subject lines - lyrical and psychological connected with Natasha’s image and the patriotic one devoted to the ordeal of the Russian people in the Patriotic war of 1812. The conductor Samuel Samosud played rather important role in the destiny of the opera. He was a prominent person in the operatic art of the Soviet period. The opera survived re-birthing due to his support: first on the stage of the Bolshoi Hall of Moscow Conservatoire in 1945, then with Mali Opera Theatre Company in Leningrad. Being the last work of Prokofiev in the opera genre “War and Peace” combines the best features of the composer’s music talent. Libretto by the composer after the Tragedy by Alexander Pushkin.
Version and orchestration by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov

Opera in 4 Acts with a Prologue. Libretto by the composer after the Tragedy by Alexander Pushkin. Version and orchestration by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. Boris Godunov-Ivan Petrov; Feodor-Valentina Klepatskaya; Xenia-Tamara Sorokina; Nurse to Xenia-Yevgeniya Verbitskaya; Prince Vasily Ivanovich Shuisky-Georgy Shulpin; Andrey Schelkalov-Alexey Ivanov; Pimen-Mark Reshetin; Grigory, the Pretender-Vladimir Ivanovsky; Marina Mnishek-Irina Arkhipova. Chorus and Orchestra of the Bolshoi Theatre of the USSR. Recorded in Moscow, 1962.

“I see the people as a single great personality inspired by one definite idea. That was my task, that was what I wanted to bring out in my opera”, said Mussorgsky of Boris Godunov. The revolutionary idea of Boris Godunov is clearly brought out in the brilliant scene of the people’s revolt (the final scene, “At Kromy”). The mighty song of the rebellious people comes as a burst of indignation against Tsar Boris and his “offsprings” whom the people hold reponsible for all their misfortunes. The idea of composing an opera after Pushkin’s historical tragedy waz suggested to Mussorgsky by his friend and admirer V. Nikolsky, a specialist in history of the Russian language. Thet was in 1868. By this time Mussorgsky’s realistic talent and interest in the life of the people had already become apparent. He accepted the idea of writing a historical opera with enthusiasm. He was absorbed in study of the historical material of the epoch. V. Stasov aided him in finding the texts of folk songs and supplied him with the information drawn from various historical sources. The opera was staged in Moscow’s Bolshoi Theatre on December 16, 1888.

Sleeping Beauty A ballet in 3 acts and prologue Op. 66

Firma Melodiya presents a complete recording of Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s ballet The Sleeping Beauty.

This ballet was finished in 1889 and has been one of the greatest masterpieces of musical and ballet art for more than a hundred years now. Tchaikovsky created the ballet in association with the outstanding ballet master Marius Petipa who later worked on The Nutcracker as well.

“The matter is not only about slapping up some commonplace ballet music. I have the impudence to conceive a genre masterpiece”, Tchaikovsky wrote.

The Sleeping Beauty stands out not only for its perfect synthesis of music and choreography inspired by the plot of Charles Perrot’s fairy tale. Tchaikovsky created a new type of 'symphonized ballet' where the images evolve and the main idea of the victory of good over evil is realized through musical means. This is what makes The Sleeping Beauty so popular in concerts too, where it, as a rule, sounds as a symphonic suite.

This recording, made in 1980 by the USSR State Academic Symphony Orchestra conducted by Evgeny Svetlanov as part of the Anthology of Russian Symphonic Music, presents a complete score of Tchaikovsky’ ballet, including the numbers usually omitted in the choreographic productions. You have a chance to hear a truly remarkable performance of The Sleeping Beauty as it was conceived by the composer.
