...finally exploding in a sea of profundity from which the first words rise. Just like Baudelaire, Luca Francesconi appears to be crying out in the apparent stasis in the middle of the work: “The beautiful life! The beautiful life!” Then everything is reversed in a mirror process, with the energy being reborn of its own antimatter, or perhaps of its memory.

Anne Quirynen video

The interstices are what fascinate artists. Interzone is one such interstice. The title is taken from the book of the same name by William S. Burroughs. It refers to the Moroccan city of Tangier, which was declared an 'international zone' in The Fez Treaty of 1912, thus remaining an undefined space, a zone of indeterminacy, sometimes also of lawlessness. An artificial world, and a world of art, that - not least among literary figures - took on an almost mythical significance. With Interzone, Poppe has broken new ground in his output. It is the product of a triangular relationship between a poet, a composer and a video artist. The complex, multi-layered nature of such a relationship is already indicated by the history of the work‘s composition. A work in progress whose genesis encompassed two years and a constant exchange between all parties involved with numerous changes, as a result of which a great deal of material was discarded, replanned, reconceived and gradually condensed from an idea into a concrete manifestation. Music to hear is characterised by the rhetoric of musical diction: an alternation of tension and relaxation, clearly defined metrics, main themes, the alternation of stressed and unstressed tempi, a comprehensibility of figures, and generally the use of figures at all... (Frank Gerhardt)

... As only few other composers, Gérard Grisey was a master at working in these various "altidudes", one who skilfully zoomed back and forth between micro- and macro-time, or, in Grisey's beautiful imagery, between human time and the extended time of whales and the extremely compressed time of insects. and this disposal of time, of the hearing perspevtive - Grisey certainly knew it - affords the music a power that touches on the metaphysical just as the texts of "Quatre chants" do. "Fertilised with time, the music is afforded the power of the sacred of which Georges Bataille speaks; mute and silent forces that invoke and exorcise the sound and its emergence - perhaps and only for a moment. Klangforum Wien / Sylvain Cambreling conductor

The Stars of Hunger, was composed in 2007. It is based on three poems by the Austrian poet Christine Lavant: “Im rueckgrat aufwaerts glimmt ein licht,” “So also geht erleuchtung vor,” “Zeig an mir die kräuter welche bestärken” and “Lösch aus mein gesicht und führe mich blind.” Rather than set the poems themselves to music, Lang used the text generation program Abulafia to produce from them a cut-up in the tradition of William S. Burroughs. The composition contains only fragments of the poems, but both the invocational gestures and the characteristic language of these lyrical works -“Ginsterlicht,” “Schlüsselblick,” “mondversippt,” “der Schlaf steht duftend und gesalbt”- remain recognizable. Lang augments the four movements devoted to the Lavant poems by an instrumental introduction and two variations on Guillaume de Machaut’s rondo Ma fin est mon commencement. The identification of beginning and an end, as indicated in the text’s title line, shows that repetition was an issue even as long ago as Machaut’s day. But while this line is enough to conjure up an era during which the belief in life after death was still unquestioned (Machaut died in 1377), Lavant’s poems articulate this belief solely via their rebellion against the suffering of living creatures.

Monadologie VII shows us a familiar and yet strange landscape, a musical topography bereft of a dramaturgy; again and again, the musical events grind to a halt, get stuck. In these brief moments of empty repetition, it is as if one could abandon every plan and every objective without the slightest loss. It is such moments that give rise to dimensions within which the difference between present and past transforms itself into a musical experience. (Sabine Sanio)

There are so many astonishing facts about Maria Callas...

First, she was born not in Greece but in Manhattan and went to school there. Second, considering her colossal influence and in contrast to the pumped-up, preposterous, overpaid pipsqueak divas of today, her actual international career was tiny - 18 years at most. Third, and in spite of her reputation, her cancellation record was the lowest of any great singer of her day. Fourth, she rarely looked at the conductor during an opera, simply because she could not see him - she was very short-sighted, and often appeared (partly as a result) to be in a trance while on stage. Fifth, she was betrayed by most of those intimate with her throughout her life, and eventually abandoned by many of those who should have known better and who claimed to have loved her. Sixth, she died almost penniless - even her grotesquely rich long-time lover, Onassis, whose marriage to Jackie Kennedy she only discovered by watching the 6 o'clock news, had invested her money in half a cargo boat, which sank. Paradoxically, although she died 30 years ago, her records today outsell every other recorded classical artist, and single handedly keep EMI Classics afloat. Last, hers was not the most beautiful voice of her time, as she frequently admitted. Some days it worked; other days it just didn't.

In the end, those who met her in Paris in the seventies agree that she was one of the loneliest, most desperate of women they had ever encountered, slowly drugging herself to death. "Every day, thank God, is one day less", she told Di Stefano. A summons to tea (for half an hour at most) often lasted until the early hours, with the guest or guests pleaded with not to leave.

It was pathetic and horrible, but it was Callas. It was always Callas, and that was the secret and the magic. We witness on stage a broken woman who sings nakedly from her heart, about herself and her life, who acts with such incredible power and unashamed truth that we stagger back before what we know, in our hearts, is all of her. No artifice here; no vulgar posturings to which her absurd imitators - and there are many - aspire. Gheorghiu, Battle, Garrett - they cannot touch her hem.

Maria - just a woman, who often spoke of Callas in the third person, in trouble, asking, begging sometimes, for our understanding and our love. She deserves it, because there was no greater singing actress in our time. And she was only 53 when she died.Tony Palmer

Berg’s chamber music version of the Strauss waltz ‘Wine Women and Song’, Op.333 is considered one of the curiosa of his oeuvre, and even today is seldom performed. Coupled here with Berg’s more substantial orchestral works, Christaner Iven is a great singer and is equally talented as an actress.
