Kolekce: Vocal CollectionPodkolekce: Vocal and Piano This is her third album for Claves. She is riding on the wave of a flourishing career, highlighted at the moment by brilliant performances at the Paris Opera in collaboration with conductor Marc Minkowski. Mezzo-soprano Maria Riccarda Wesseling from the Grisons in Switzerland has chosen the intimacy of song to spotlight another facet of her superb voice. Accompanied by pianist Nathalie Dang, she performs works by three exceptional women composers: Clara Schumann, Lili Boulanger and Alma Mahler. A work of pure poetry captured on recording by Radio Suisse Romande - Espace 2 in Geneva last spring, the CD is accompanied by liner notes penned by writer Etienne Barilier.

Kolekce: BaroqueAfter a first album dedicated to polyphonic rarities by the Franco-Flemish composer Philippe de Monte (Claves CD 50-2712), the Ensemble Orlando de Fribourg and conductor Laurent Gendre, escorted for the occasion by the ensemble La Cetra from Basel, have set out to conquer the gigantic Johann-Sebastian Bach, and two of his four “Missa Breve”: Masses BWV 234 and 235. As Etienne Barilier, who wrote the booklet, points out, we know neither their precise destination nor the exact date of composition; we only know that they were written between 1735 and 1744. “If they remain relatively little known, even today, it is because they are not ex nihilo creations, says the author. Virtually all the pieces that make them up (six per mass: the Kyrie, followed by a Gloria subdivided into five parts) were borrowed from cantatas composed ten or twenty years previously, between 1723-1726. It may well even be that the very few “original” pieces of these masses were not in fact orginals, but came from cantatas that have since been lost”. And so what! The genius of the Thomaskirche Cantor is present and there is little chance that anyone listening to these Lutheran masses may get a feeling of déja-vu. As Barilier remarks, “the same pieces, transposed into different key signatures, with different orchestral colours and new texts, are no longer the same pieces.” |

Kolekce: Vocal CollectionPodkolekce: Choir and Orchestra For the 15th anniversary of the death of the outstanding Russian composer Georgy Sviridov, Firma Melodiya presents an album of his best known works from different years.
His creative work was uncommon for 20th century music - he found his style remained inside the classical tradition without breaking it. No matter what he composed for - voice, choir or orchestra - his music went straight to the heart, evoking a sensitive listener’s keen response, be it a sophisticated music lover or a dilettante.
Sviridov’s music revives and continues the best aspects of the Russian music tradition. It is no mere chance that his best known compositions are linked with the name of Alexander Pushkin. These are the ones featured on this album.
The score to the motion picture The Blizzard, after Pushkin’s novel, was composed in 1964. It has outlived the film, becoming a self-sufficient and incredibly popular symphonic piece. Pushkin’s Garland for soloists, choir and instrumental ensemble became the composer’s offering for the poet’s 180th anniversary. This choir cycle opened a new page in Sviridov’s creative path, anticipating his late vocal opuses.
Sviridov's works are performed by the Moscow Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Vladimir Fedoseyev, a recognized interpreter of the composer’s music, and the remarkable Moscow Chamber Choir under Vladimir Minin.
