World premiere recording

Now in his early nineties, Francis Jackson remains one of the finest, best loved and most versatile church musicians of our age. The eleven works on this disc, none of them previously recorded, have all the colour, emotional depth and attention to structural detail that are consistent hallmarks of his style. Working closely with the composer, The Exon Singers bring their customary blend of virtuosity, intense commitment and subtle responsiveness to this portrait in sound of a very special composer.

In the 1960s few would have predicted that Peter Maxwell Davies would eventually write a set of Evening Canticles; yet religious texts have always been of fundamental importance to the composer, as this disc vividly demonstrates by bringing together sacred masterworks from both ends of his career. Tough, uncompromising and of surpassing beauty, Davies’ major contributions to the Anglican repertoire are given thrilling voice by these fearless champions of contemporary liturgical music.

Chastised for his 'excesses in life and conversation', Michael Wise was hit about the head and 'kill'd downright' by the night watchman in Salisbury Cathedral, robbing history of one of the period's most prolific and respected composers and St Paul's Cathedral of its forthcoming Master of the Choristers. This recording, the first dedicated to Wise's music, is testament to the more respectable music making that is Wise's legacy.

The Caius singers under Geoffrey Webber serve the music with an ideally informed and energetic rigour, their second volume of music from the Restoration. They take a break from that in July when they partner the choir of Kings College, London to record Shchedrin's The Sealed Angel.

It is easy to forget that our great English choral tradition was once silenced by Act of Parliament. The Restoration of the Monarchy in 1660 ushered in one of the finest periods of English music, though the road to recovery for church music was a slow and difficult one. William Turner, then a precocious nine year-old, went on to become one of the best known composers and singers of his day. This premiere recording presents a cross section of Turner's sacred music, ranging from small-scale liturgical works to some of his grandest creations, the Te Deum and Jubilate in D.

During the last months of his life Mozart composed a Requiem, which he was not able to finish. The composition is shrouded in mystery and linked with different legends, all of which are connected with a mysterious gentleman who ordered it. But whatever the reason for its creation, the Requiem is one of the greatest works of the human musical genius. The performance in this release is of prestigious Bulgarian artists, which have achieved an emotional, impressive and fascinating interpretation. The artistic value of the recording is a result of a truthful rendition of the emotions and the meaning of the different movements of the Requiem, and emphasizing the melody and the details of Mozart's music. The soloist ensemble, selected in accordance with the score, contributes to the whole impact of the composition. This release can undoubtedly be ranked among the interesting interpretations of the great work of Mozart.

John Taverner brought the English florid style to its culmination and final flowering; his music is quite unlike anything written by his continental contemporaries and, viewed retrospectively, represents not only the culmination of one period but also the beginning of something new. In his debut recording with the critically acclaimed Edinburgh choir, Duncan Ferguson presents this music with forces akin to those of the 16th century - a small group of children and a larger number of men.The singers respond with their characteristic freshness, and an emotional authenticity born of the daily round of liturgical performance.

National Youth Choir of Great Britain and Laudibus - Mike Brewer

Allain has developed a unique musical dialect malleable enough to cover the gamut of liturgical purposes represented on this disc. Whether refracted through the facets of spiritual, carol, motet or Mass setting, his is a music that can only be added to the list of languages from which we should all take inspiration.

Saxophonist John Harle joins Scottish soprano Susan Hamilton and Delphian artist Matthew Owens in these bold works, which are at once heartrending and uncompromising. Whether refracted through the varied generic possibilities of spiritual, carol, motet or Mass, Richard Allain has developed a musical dialect malleable enough to cover the gamut of liturgical purposes represented on this disc. With advocates such as these, Allain’s music cannot fail to make a lasting impression.

Choir of St Mary's Cathedral, Edinburgh

The Choir of St Mary's Cathedral is unique in Scotland in maintaining daily choral services in the Anglican tradition, and enjoys an international reputation for its daily services, broadcasts, recordings, concerts, and tours. The Cathedral was the first in the United Kingdom to allow girls to join boys as trebles in 1978 and then, in 2006, to allow female altos to sing alongside countertenors in the choir. Appointed in 2008, Organist and Master of the Music Duncan Ferguson has been instrumental in establishing the choir's status as one of UK's foremost cathedral choirs, whose recording catalogue now includes some six discs on Delphian.

Celebrating his 50th birthday in 2012, Gabriel Jackson has had a long and close association with the Choir of St Mary's Cathedral. This is the choir's second disc of Jackson's choral music on Delphian, and under Ferguson's dynamic direction they present a sequence of recording premieres that centre on the florid Hymn to St Margaret of Scotland, which has been newly written for the choir. A fitting celebration for Jackson's half-century, the disc opens a window on the luminous sound-world of one of Britain's finest choral composers.

Tewkesbury Abbey Schola Cantorum and Charivari Agréable come together for the first time in vividly communicative interpretations of three of Mozart’s sacred masterpieces. The forces are very much as Mozart intended - a period orchestra, an all-male chorus and soloists (including 2009 BBC Chorister of the Year Laurence Kilsby) drawn from the choir. Under Benjamin Nicholas’s spirited direction these performances bristle with energy and the invigorating freshness of youth.
