Two More Steps Towards Uncertainty (2007) for symphonic orchestra

Coming to Life. Generation, Transition, Interlocking of Phases (2006 - rev. 2009) for 7 performers
Limen (2010) for 16 string instruments

From the liner notes by Ettore Napoli: “This Cd contains works written by Carlo Alessandro Landini (1954) for orchestra and is being released seven years after the previous one published by Tactus (TC951201), a Cd which already included some of the most interesting pages of contemporary Italian music, among the few capable of standing up to the quality of coeval international production. In fact, it is not by chance that this Milanese composer ends up being more appreciated abroad than he is in Italy, as validated - citing in random order - by the “Fulbright Award” granted by the United States Department of Education in 1981 and the numerous prizes he was later on awarded: among many others, the Warsaw’s “K. Serocki” (2002 and again 2004) Competition, the renowned “W. Lutosławski” Prize (2008) and the Saint Petersburg’s “S. Prokof ’ev” International Contest (2012). In November 2013 Landini represented Italy as the sole Italian participant in the World New Music Days held in Vienna and Bratislava by the ISCM. A complementary aspect of Landini’s internationalism is exemplified by his teaching in some of the most prestigious American Universities (University of California at San Diego, New York State University at Buffalo, Eastman School of Music, Columbia University in New York, University of Maryland) as well as throughout Europe, including the Musikhochschule in Trossingen (Germany) and Hamu in Prague (Czech Republic). The four works presented in this Cd verify the widely reaching cultural breeze spread by Landini’s music [...]”

La voce contemporanea in Italia vol. 6
Chapter 6 in the series “La voce contemporanea in Italia” which sees the Duo Alterno (Tiziana Scandaletti, voice and Riccardo Piacentini, piano) as protagonist.
Continuing the exploration of the contemporary repertoire for voice and piano, in this album Duo Alterno analyses the relationship between musc and image. We also discover the two sides of the score: the musical one and the visual one. Sometimes scores look so beautiful that can be considered artworks themselves (as showed by the pictures in the booklet).

The Seasons, Op. 37bis
Children’s Album, Op. 39

From the liner notes by Luca Di Giulio: “ [...] The Seasons are full of a melancholy lyricism, of Slav melodies, but there is no display of virtuosity as an end in itself. Each piece portrays a scene or atmosphere typical of the month whose title it bears. The composer acts as an attentive observer in the twelve pages of the album: although his involvement is not strictly connected to the activities narrated, Tchaikovsky uses the titles of the pieces as a pretext to talk about the universal themes of the life of man: joy, sadness, prayer, love, despair, boldness, hope. [...]
The twenty-four pieces of the Children’s Album took shape from 13th to 16th April 1878 in Kamenka in Ukraine, on his return from a trip to western Europe which followed the tragic epilogue to the marriage with Antonina Milyukova. The inspiration for this cycle probably comes partly from the Capricious Sophie’s Album, a nineteenth-century children’s publication which told stories of dolls. The twenty-four miniatures which make up the collection are fascinating, often humorous, and satisfying to play and are influenced by Robert Schumann.

Raffaele di Donna bass recorder

Leonardo LEO (1694-1744)
Sonata I in F major
Sonata II in C major
Sonata VI in G minor
Sonata IV in F major
Sonata III in D minor
Sonata V in F major
Sonata VII in D minor

From the liner notes by Tommaso Rossi: “In this abundant repertory contained in the Austrian ‘Vicere’ Harrach’s collection a particular role, in the undoubted value of their musical construction and the interest that they represent in the recorder repertory of those years, is played by Leonardo Leo’s seven sonatas for recorder and basso continuo, until today unpublished on CD and - I should say surprisingly - completely ignored in execution. [...] Leo’s sonatas shed new light on the recorder repertory in the Neapolitan area and are valuable testimony to a significant interest in this instrument shown by the composer from S. Vito dei Normanni, which accompanies the interest now very well known in the cello.
[...] Regarding our interpretation of Leo’s sonatas, we have tried to vary the sonority of the basso continuo as much as possible, seeking the greatest possible number of solutions for combining the accompanying instruments, including in a single sonata the possibility of using the bass recorder. Therefore we have proposed the full ensemble (harpsichord, cello and archlute), solo harpsichord, cello and archlute, bass recorder and archlute, and also some movements given to individual instruments (solo archlute, solo cello). The eclecticism of Leo and the Neapolitan ‘maestri’ which circulates through the manuscripts still preserved in the archives of the ancient ‘conservatori’ is a valuable key to interpretation of Neapolitan musical reality of the Eighteenth century and undoubtedly a further reason to bring to light the extremely interesting musical production of the period”.

Raffaele Grimaldi (*1980)
Primal - Hypnagogical extended space (2012) percussion solo
Hugues Dufourt (*1943)
Plus Oultre (1990) pour percussion solo

The pieces on this CD are assigned to an abundant set of percussion instruments (in some cases more than 50), arranged in a cage-like structure surrounding a single soloist. The choice of instruments varies from one piece to another, maintaining, however, a marked presence of metallic idiophones of Asian origin, capable of producing bright, but also saturated and long-resonating, sounds. For this choice there is a little story which deserves to be told. Everything began at the beginning of the nineties, with a commission that
the percussionist Thierry Miroglio gave to various composers: among those who answered was Hugues Dufourt, with Plus oultre (1990), a visionary piece which, by working on metallic resonances, ordered them in almost choral instrumental syntheses and textures, exploring the threshold between sound and noise; and, a little later, a young Fausto Romitelli (who in those years had come into contact with Dufourt at the «Centre d’Information et de Documentation / Recherche Musicale» in Paris), who with a short piece inspired by Rimbaud, Golfi d’ombra (1993), in his turn attempted to exploit re-sonances to generate processes of timbric ransformation.
The choice of instruments can be linked to a poetic intuition underlying both pieces: that wish or rather that desire to experience unstable acoustic forms and dynamic profiles in constant evolution, to exploit the extraordinary symbolic power of roughness, graininess and inharmony. Both, in pursuing these objectives, made use of the action of a solo percussionist, to whom they gave the task of manoeuvring in a broad constellation of sonority divided between the fields of determinate and indeterminate pitch.
