Kolekce: SymphonyPodkolekce: Orchestr Firma Melodiya presents a set of selected symphonies by Nikolai Myaskovsky.
This composer’s music is not widely popular today, but he belongs in the group of Russia’s brightest music talents of the first half of the 20th century. His music organically combines old and new, traditions of classical music culture and keenness of expressionism, high tragedy of Beethoven and Tchaikovsky and boldness of avant-garde music. Dmitri Shostakovich considered Mayskovsky “the major symphonist after Mahler”, and Sergei Prokofiev wrote that Myaskovsky “was somewhat more a philosopher - his music is wise, passionate, gloomy and self-absorbed”.
Symphony was the most important genre to the composer. His twenty-seven symphonies, composed over a 40 year period, are a sort of personal diary, reflecting the complicated and winding path of his artistic evolution. At the same time, they are a music chronicle of the age, a response of the big artist to the most significant historic and cultural events of the time.
The set includes six symphonies from Myaskovsky’s later period (1935 to 1950) - Nos 16, 17, 21, 22, 25 and 27 - performed by the USSR State Academic Symphony Orchestra conducted by the outstanding Evgeny Svetlanov (the only conductor in the world to record all of Myaskovsky’s symphonies) and his predecessor in the State Orchestra, Konstantin Ivanov, one of the major representatives of the Soviet conducting school.
Miaskovsky:
Symphony No. 16 in F major, Op.39 - Konstantin Ivanov, conductor
Symphony No. 17 in G sharp minor, Op. 41 - Evgeny Svetlanov, conductor
Symphony No. 21 in F sharp minor, Op. 51 -Konstantin Ivanov, conductor
Symphony No. 22 in B minor, Op. 54 'Symphony-Ballad ' - Evgeny Svetlanov, conductor
Symphony No. 25 in D flat major, Op. 69 - Evgeny Svetlanov, conductor
Symphony No. 27 in C minor, Op. 85 - Evgeny Svetlanov, conductor

Kolekce: Ballet MusicPodkolekce: Orchestr Sleeping Beauty A ballet in 3 acts and prologue Op. 66
Firma Melodiya presents a complete recording of Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s ballet The Sleeping Beauty.
This ballet was finished in 1889 and has been one of the greatest masterpieces of musical and ballet art for more than a hundred years now. Tchaikovsky created the ballet in association with the outstanding ballet master Marius Petipa who later worked on The Nutcracker as well.
“The matter is not only about slapping up some commonplace ballet music. I have the impudence to conceive a genre masterpiece”, Tchaikovsky wrote.
The Sleeping Beauty stands out not only for its perfect synthesis of music and choreography inspired by the plot of Charles Perrot’s fairy tale. Tchaikovsky created a new type of 'symphonized ballet' where the images evolve and the main idea of the victory of good over evil is realized through musical means. This is what makes The Sleeping Beauty so popular in concerts too, where it, as a rule, sounds as a symphonic suite.
This recording, made in 1980 by the USSR State Academic Symphony Orchestra conducted by Evgeny Svetlanov as part of the Anthology of Russian Symphonic Music, presents a complete score of Tchaikovsky’ ballet, including the numbers usually omitted in the choreographic productions. You have a chance to hear a truly remarkable performance of The Sleeping Beauty as it was conceived by the composer. |

Kolekce: Orchestral WorksPodkolekce: Orchestr Firma Melodiya presents a boxed set dedicated to the 75th anniversary of one of the outstanding contemporary Russian conductors, Dmitri Kitayenko.
“Today he can be undoubtedly considered one of the five or six best conductors of the world. This phenomenon is out of the ordinary”, Herbert von Karajan wrote about Kitayenko after the young Soviet conductor gave a brilliant performance at the international competition in Vienna, receiving the second prize and winning the hearts of the Viennese audience and media. Evgeny Svetlanov also greeted his younger colleague on the pages of the Soviet press as a talented and promising conductor.
A graduate of the Leningrad Conservatory who also completed a postgraduate course at the Moscow Conservatory and a training course at the Vienna Academy of Music, Dmitri Kitayenko had a brilliant start to his conducting career. From 1976 to 1990 he headed the Academic Symphony Orchestra of the Moscow Philharmonic Society. Under his leadership the celebrated orchestra substantially expanded its repertoire and actively toured.
During recent decades, the conductor worked with the orchestras of Western Europe, Japan, South Korea and the United States and regularly recorded.
This 6 CD set includes recordings made by Dmitri Kitayenko in the studio and in the concert hall between 1975 and 1987 with the orchestra of the Moscow Philharmonic Society and the USSR State Academic Symphony Orchestra. The repertoire included showcases the conductor’s stylistic diversity and highest mastery.
These recordings will be of interest to those who remembers Kitayenko’s performances of the past years and to a new generation of listeners as well.
