Piano Concerto
Saint-Saëns:
Piano Concerto No. 2 in G minor, Op. 22
Emmanuel Despax is a rising star on the UK and international piano scene, who has performed at the Wigmore and Cadogan Halls in London, the Salle Gaveau and Louvre Auditorium in Paris, and with orchestras including the CBSO.
His debut concerto recording, with the Orpheus Sinfonia under Thomas Carroll, features the premiere recording of Stephen Goss’s Piano Concerto, inspired by the designs of Thomas Heatherwick (the work’s premiere performance was the first classical concert in which audiences were invited to bring their ipads and tablets, to watch an interactive display designed to accompany the music). The work is accompanied by two similarly expressive and characterful works, Saint-Saëns’ ever-popular Piano Concerto No.2 and Franck’s Variations symphoniques. |

Agorawd ‘Torri’r Garreg’ / ‘Break the Stone’ Overture
BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Jac van Steen
The first release from the BBC National Orchestra of Wales’s inaugural Composer in Residence, Guto Pryderi Puw. Puw studied composition with composers John Pickard, Andrew Lewis and Pwyll ap Siôn. He first made an impact as a composer in 1995 when he won the Composer's Medal at the National Eisteddfod (and again in 1997). Since then he has received many commissions and performances while being much in demand as a composer at various festivals in the UK and abroad. His music is regularly broadcast on radio and television. He is the Chairman and Artistic Director of the Bangor New Music Festival, which has been running since 2000.
In 2005 his orchestral work, a BBC Radio 3 commission, 'Reservoirs', was nominated in the Large-Scale Composition category of the Royal Philharmonic Society Music Awards, and in February 2006 he was appointed as the first Resident Composer with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales to compose three new orchestral commissions. His 'Concerto for Oboe' won the BBC Radio 3 'Listeners Award' category at the 2007 British Composer Awards and the Proms commissioned piece '...unless I open the door...' won BBC Music Magazine's 'Best Proms Premiere' for its performance in 2007. In 2010 he won an award from the Thomas Ellis Memorial Fund to record his orchestral music on the Signum label. He is currently working on a concerto for violinist Madeleine Mitchell for 2014 and his opera Y Tŵr (‘The Tower’) commissioned by Music Theatre Wales for 2016.
A dual-language release in both Welsh and English, this release features a range of orchestral works inspired by stories and landscapes of Wales. |

Subcollection: Orchestra For this album, renowned classical guitarist Christoph Denoth joins with the London Symphony Orchestra under conductor Jesus Lopez Cobos to bring us a beautiful recording of compositions by Lorenzo Palomo (b. 1938), Joaquin Rodrigo (1901-1999), and Joquin Malats (1872-1912). The title track of the album, Palomo's Nocturnos de Andalucia, was composed for Pepe Romero. The full suite for guitar and orchestra was premiered in Berlin on January 27, 1996, with Romero performing. Christoph Denoth began his concert career at age 15. He regularly performs with chamber ensembles, such as the Nouvel Ensemble Contemporain and the Offenburger Streichtrio. He also performs solo concerts internationally. Joquin Malats' Serenata Espanola is arranged for this recording by Christoph Denoth and Jonathan Rathbone, and is the world premiere recording |

Subcollection: Flute Orchestra da Camera Fiorentina, Conductor: Antonio Rossi
This tribute, inspired by James Redfield's bestseller, The Celestine Prophecy, comprises ten movements featuring Andrea Ceccomori on flute, supported by the Orchestra da Camera Fiorentina.
The beautiful melodies are hauntingly romantic, evoking the intimate and mysterious soul of Gaia.
Lyrical flute lines are delicately woven into warm orchestral textures whose variations flow, soar and spiral until they reach heights of passion and majesty.
A feeling of deep emotional tranquillity pervades, like a stream which tumbles and cascades through virgin forests without ever losing, for a moment, its sense of flow or purpose; as if the little stream already knew the ocean that awaits it.
The energy behind the creation of this work guides us gently back to a compassionate space where we may once again breathe freely in the remembrance of our own primordial nature. |

Subcollection: Piano DVD Extra: Thomas Adès and Tal Rosner in conversation
The London Sinfonietta combine two works from Thomas Adès, one of the most distinctive and popular voices in modern composition. Both works feature accompanying films (by Tal Rosner and Sophie Clements) that are included in this CD/DVD set. This is the second CD for the London Sinfonietta with Signum. It follows their October release of music by Louis Andriessen, featuring the UK premiere of Anaïs Nin, alongside his famed work De Staat.
In Seven Days is a musical interpretation for piano and orchestra of the biblical ‘creation’ by Thomas Adès, composed in collaboration with a film-piece by the artist and filmmaker Tal Rosner. Both music and film evoke the processes of the creation rather than the objects described in the movement titles, using simple elements in repeated and evolving contexts in a perpetual state of flux, change and growth.
The Piano Studies Nos 6 & 7 are arrangements of player-piano works by the American composer Conlon Nancarrow. An influential figure to generations of composers, Nancarrow’s studies for the player-piano (or pianola) allowed him to generate music of extreme rhythmic complexity in a multitude of inventive ways. These arrangements for two pianos by Thomas Adès capture the strange magic of the originals, where fragmented musical ideas are played off against each other in a wild, almost jazz-like way. The works are accompanied by film-visualisations by Tal Rosner and Sophie Clements. |

Collection: Orchestral Works Subcollection: Orchestra Olga Neuwirth 's faible for grotesque themes and her occasional vegetative proliferation of pieces ensured her a permanent place in the repertoire. As brilliant growths of an undomesticated artist.
Many-facetted, vigorously arranged scores with the most heterogeneous influences and styles, far remote from any of the false glamour characteristic of postmodernity. With the conductor Pierre Boulez she has found herself a genuine ally. (Wolfgang Fuhrmann)
