Anthology of Piano Music by Russian and Soviet Composers
Part 2 Disc 1: 1917-1991

Continuing their series, Melodiya presents Volume 5 of their Anthology of Piano Music by Russian and Soviet Composers.

Another release of the Anthology of Piano Music by Russian and Soviet Composers features works of the late 1950s and the first half of the 1970s by composers of ‘traditional’ school. Nevertheless, the listeners will find a lot of real surprises on this disc. It opens with a once famous Rondo by Dmitri Kobalevsky he composed for the First Tchaikovsky International Competition as an obligatory programme for the pianists in the second round. Alemdar Karamanov’s naïve and romantic Variations showcase his music from a peculiar angle while he is better known as an author of monumental biblical symphonies. The piano sonatas by two prominent representatives of the Leningrad composing school Boris Tishchenko and Boris Arapov are true gems of this release. They are complimented with compositions by the authors from the former Soviet republics such as Mikhail Skorik (Ukraine) and Yuri Nikolayev (Uzbekistan).

Anthology of Piano Music by Russian and Soviet Composers
Part 1 Disc 4: 1917-1991

Firma Melodiya and the Tikhon Khrennikov Charitable Foundation present the joint project - Anthology of Piano Music by Russian and Soviet Composers. The project is conceived as a series of 30 discs featuring recordings of not only recognized masterpieces of Russian and Soviet music, but also as a revival of unjustly forgotten compositions. The Anthology is an attempt to collect together the music constituting the pride of Russian culture. The series will include works by such composers as Nikolai Myaskovsky, Aram Khachaturian, Dmitri Shostakovich, Andrei Eshpai, Tikhon Khrennikov, Nikolai Roslavets, Vissarion Shebalin, Mieczyslaw Weinberg, Rodion Shchedrin, Alexander Alexandrov, Arno Babajanian, Galina Ustvolskaya, Dmitri Kabalevsky, Konstantin Makarov-Rakitin and many others. A significant part of the compositions will be recorded for the first time. This series is in the first instance an outlook from the 21st century so important for a new generation of musicians, while it revisits the previous two centuries. The Anthology features some of the young virtuosos of piano music such as Andrei Korobeynikov, Nikita Mdoyants, Luka Okrostsvaridze, Asiya Korepanova, Yuri Favorin, Ekaterina Mechetina and others. They not just performed but took part in compiling the series searching in the music archives for the compositions which, in their opinion, deserved a way back to their listeners. The series will be split in 4 sections: • 1917-1991 (music of the Soviet period) • 1991-2010 (contemporary music) • Russian piano music (before 1917) • Music of expatriate Russian composers

Rachmaninov plays and conducts, vol.1
S.Rachmaninov. Piano concerto No.2, Isle of the Dead, Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini
S.Rachmaninov, piano
Philadelphia Symphony orchestra conducted by L.Stokovsky

The first disc of our historic 8-volume collection that illustrates Rachmaninov's genius as pianist and conductor.

Philadelphia Orchestra conducted Leopold Stokowski (1 - 3, 5), Rachmaninov (4)

Vista Vera are serving admirers well with this set which restores to circulation the majority of his discs. The authorial voice we hear conducting the Isle of the Dead is intensely purposely but dramatic, powerful and tense. This famous recording and that of the Third Symphony (vol.5) show what we have missed through the restrictions on his conducting for RCA Victor. But enough remains to make a study of this body of work both necessary and important - both for students of Rachmaninov and for admirers of the repertoire and great pianism. a pianophile without Rachmaninov's recordings should not really sleep at night.

The Golden Duet:
Elena Sorokina, piano
Alexander Bakhchiev, piano

Clavier duet music of Johann Sebastian Bach, his descendants and students recreates the "live history" of the transition era: a complicated evolution of baroque into classicism and romanticism, change of the dominating ways of musical thinking - from the so-called "polyphonic" to "homophonic", changes in the system of musical images, genres, and means of expression.

Elena Sorokina and Alexander Bakhchiev are often called Russia' Golden Duet. They have been active on concert stage for 35 years. Their vast repertoire includes most of the works ever written for piano four hands and for two pianos. To mark 200-years anniversary of Franz Schubert they performed in Moscow and other cities all his compositions for piano four hands.
A.Bakhchiev and E.Sorokina were graduated from Moscow Conservatoire, and now both of them are Moscow Conservatoire professors.
Elena Sorokina is Doctor of musical science, Deputy Rector and Head of the Chair of history of theRussian music at the Moscow Conservatoire. Alexander Bakhchiev has been playing solo and in ensembles for over 40 years. He made over 60 recordings of music from baroque to modern composers. Sofia Gubaidullina dedicated her Concerto Introitus and Efim Podgaitz his Bakhchiev-concerto to him.
The duet recorded over 40 gramophone records and compact discs including Mozart's Complete Piano Duets, Music of Old Vienna, Piano duets by Rachmaninov, and many more.
In 1990 they were elected Presidents of the National Association of the Piano Duets.
