STANFORD - Piano Concerto, Variations - Finghin Collins - Irish National Orchestra - Montgomery

STANFORD - Piano Concerto, Variations - Finghin Collins - Irish National Orchestra - Montgomery
ID: CLAVES501101
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Subcollection: Piano

Do you know Charles Villiers Stanford? If not, here is a wonderful opportunity to fill this gap: Irish pianist Finghin Collins (author of several Claves albums, among which volumes 1 and 3 of the Schumann collection) and the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra co-sign with the Swiss label a magnificent recording completely dedicated to this …. Irish composer! Son of a protestant lawyer, Stanford went to Queen's College in Cambridge and Trinity College, Dublin, then left for Leipzig to study with Reinecke and Kiel. Most of his life and work were associated with Cambridge, where he was a prominent actor of the University Music Society, and with London's Royal College of Music, where he taught composition right from the opening of the establishment in 1883. He is to be thanked for the first English auditions of numerous Romantic masterpieces - such as Brahms' First Symphony in 1877 - and for highly original symphonic arrangements of Hymns for the Anglican liturgy. Among his own productions, « The Revenge » - a choral ballad written for the Leeds Festival - remained an absolute favourite with British choirs for many years. Featured on Finghin Collins's CD, his 2nd Piano Concerto also dates from the 1910 Leeds Festival, where Sergei Rachmaninov interpreted his 2nd Concerto himself. The work is dedicated to Ukranian pianist Moritz Rosenthal. The Concert Variations upon an English Theme "Down Among the Dead Men", on the other hand, date from 1898 and were written for Leonard Borwick, an English pianist and former pupil of Clara Schumann.

Schumann, Robert & Clara: Music for Oboe and Cor Anglais

Schumann, Robert & Clara: Music for Oboe and Cor Anglais
ID: CC2002
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Subcollection: Piano

The CD booklet contains an article by Keith Fraser (in English, French and German) on the relationship between Robert and Clara Schumann and a description of each piece, accompanied by session photographs.

How much do pictures reflect reality? The image on the front of this CD is an anonymous copy of a photograph taken of Robert and Clara Schumann in 1850, the year after most of the pieces here were written. Robert, standing soberly by the piano, was actually addicted to wine, women and song. His drinking was referred to by Clara's father Friedrich Wieck in his attempts to prevent their marriage, and Robert's affairs were a problem for Clara. Not so the songs, of which he wrote more than 100 in 1840, the year he married Clara. He was 40 years old in this picture, by this time a thoroughly respected composer, though more successful in some genres than others. His earlier intention, to be a concert pianist, had been thwarted by a (possibly self-inflicted) injury to his right hand. And what of Clara? She was 31 and an acclaimed pianist. She had already given birth to six of her eight children (of whom seven survived). At this period she was also performing, but her pregnancies (and Robert's encouragement) had led to a flowering of her compositional skills. Her face - in common with other photos of her - seems to express a kind of abstracted melancholy. But here the copyist has lied; in the original photograph she is almost smiling. Certainly the years from her marriage until Robert's physical and mental health began its final decline in 1852 contained much ecstatic happiness. As she wrote in her diary soon after their marriage: "I am supremely happy, and becoming more so all the time - if my Robert is as happy as I am, then I will wish for nothing further - because of my love I could sometimes hurt him with my kisses; instead of becoming quieter (as they say one gets to become in a marriage) I become more fiery! - my poor beloved husband! Their relationship was one of mutual love and mutual support, though perhaps Clara was able to support Robert more than the other way round. She encouraged him constantly, and by performing his works at her concerts brought them into the public domain. Robert sometimes described her as his own "right hand". She was sociable and outgoing, he more private and reserved outside his own circle of friends. He needed her support, and indeed sometimes felt inadequate and depressed on her concert tours when she was the star soloist and and he could no longer play the piano properly. Clara's encouragement of Robert was from a position of equality, and the anonymous illustrator has made a blatent distortion in the picture by moving the angle of her head from upright in the original photograph to a more submissive position - forward and down. The Calm of Einaudi - Christine Rayner, solo piano

The Calm of Einaudi - Christine Rayner, solo piano

Christine Rayner plays Ludovico Einaudi’s music for solo piano in aid of UK Cancer Charities and Research. The calming influence of the pieces selected for this collection create a sanctuary in which the stresses of daily life have no place.
“On first hearing the beautiful Le Onde by Ludovico Einaudi in 2009 I was captivated. This piece touched me deeply, and playing his music has since become a vital part of my life.
The calming influence of many of Einaudi’s works creates for me a sanctuary in which the stresses of daily life have no place. His music would undoubtedly have inspired and uplifted me during the dark months of my chemotherapy eleven years ago, and I regret that it was unknown to me at that time.
With this in mind, I humbly present my selected pieces from Einaudi’s past albums as a compilation intended to offer the listener a restful hour of peace, calm and relaxation.”
At least £1 per copy sold will be Gift-Aid donated to UK Cancer Charities. Donations from sales will also go to directly help fund Prof. Roy Bicknell’s research into alternative treatments to chemotherapy.

Max d Ollone - Orchestral Music - Kaplan - Thiollier - Obc - Foster

Max d Ollone - Orchestral Music - Kaplan - Thiollier - Obc - Foster
ID: CLAVES502301
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Subcollection: Orchestra

This compact disc features the premiere recordings of the most important works for orchestra by Max d’Ollone: «Le Ménétrier» (the village fiddler), Lamento and the Fantasy for Piano and Orchestra Like his teacher Jules Massenet, d’Ollone was particularly fascinated by the human voice, and for this reason he is primarily remembered as a composer of operas, sacred and secular cantatas and countless songs.
Although Max d’Ollone wrote relatively little orchestral music and although this repertoire was written in a limited period of time (almost exclusively before 1914), his symphonic music is characterized by a very high artistic and compositional quality. His orchestral music is richly lyrical, emotionally expressive and technically impeccable.
The three-movement structure of «Le Ménétrier» with a solo violin part is very reminiscent of a concerto, a purely instrumental form, but d’Ollone described it as a «symphonic poem in three parts with a solo violin». Lamento is a meticulously orchestrated work. One is carried away by the beauty of its melodic lines and their emotional force. The delicate harmonies, at times unexpected and yet always elegant and smooth, contribute to the sense of movement toward a profound serenity. The Fantasy for Piano and Orchestra is forceful and majestic, at times reminiscent of Saint-Saëns. The monumental, grandiloquent finale masterfully accentuates the emotional power of this composition. This recording is rounded off by a chamber music work, the Andante and Scherzo for Three Cellos a short composition that offers clear demonstration of the evolution of the composer’s musical language.

Clara Haskil - OSR - Ernest Ansermet - Schumann - Beethoven

Clara Haskil - OSR - Ernest Ansermet - Schumann - Beethoven
ID: CLAVES502408

Type: CD
Subcollection: Piano

Is it even necessary to introduce Clara Haskil? Sublime pianist, perhaps too often reduced to the role of an interpreter of Mozart, she now discloses a new side of her art for Claves, a side that already has received much attention in recordings: her collaboration with conductor Ernest Ansermet and his orchestra, the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande; two live recordings made by Radio Suisse Romande during the last years of her life. On the program: Schumann’s Concerto in A Minor, recorded at Victoria Hall in Geneva in 1956, and Beethoven’s Concerto No. 3, which is immortalized here in a recording from the Septembre Musical in Montreux in 1960, less than four months before the pianist’s tragic death in Brussels. These are moving testimonies of her art that provide witness to the immense subtlety of her playing, fragile and irresistibly incandescent. And for Claves Records, which was taken over by the Clara Haskil Foundation, it is the opportunity to pay homage to its new “patron saint”.

Gregorio Zanon : The compelling need to express
Since its founding toward the end of the 1960’s, Claves has always placed special importance on finding and promoting young, talented artists. Pianists, violinists, flutists… and now, something unusual? A young composer from the Canton of Vaud, not shaped by the rules of a particular school but by the magic of his own passions. Gregorio Zanon composes like he breathes: with his stomach, his heart and that sense of urgency that makes art come vibrantly to life. He doesn’t have a choice; the notes that he brings to paper amass with the sole desire to express… an emotion, a question, a doubt, a desire… Gregorio Zanon does not write music with the intention of earning a place in posterity, and it is for reason of the integrity of his music that Claves has chosen to feature his works on a CD, brought to life by our “in-house” artists the Terpsycordes Quartet (this is already the ensemble’s third recording for the Swiss classical label) and Mark Drobinksy, cello, Jocelyne Rudasigwa, double bass (with Boulouris 5) and pianist Xavier Dami. A recording to discover!
