THE GRANNIES FROM SVOGE AND SVIDNYA - AUTHENTIC FOLKLORE

Type: CD

Performers: Svidnya Troika: Vaska Ilkova (77), Ivanka Dinkova (79), Filatka Sokolova (68) Svoge Group: Tsvetanka Panchova (78), Elitsa Simeonova (72), Slavka Angelova (64), Vena Yordanova (65), Tsenka Krasteva (81), Evdokia Velkova (72), Nadejda Nikolova (68), Temenuzhka Kirova (39), Paraskeva Marinkova (64)

Art Manager - Snejanka BORISSOVA

Svoge and Svidnya are located on the northern border of the polyphonic Shope region. Situated on both banks of the Iskar River, they strive to preserve their unique folk heritage. The singers of the Svoge Group have worked together since 1980, and those from the Svidnya Troika - since 1981. Their age ranges from 64 to 81 years. Many of the singers remember the time when these songs were part of their way of living: ritual songs, songs for harvest time, pastoral, working-bee, horo, at the table songs. For this reason they sound so authentic! The singers perform in antiphony to present the local polyphonic tradition (both groups alternate). One of the singers (a “whooper”) sings the song, while the rest drag the bourdon voice (“draggers”). The songs are very effective; they also employ trill-like quavers and yelling. Some monophonic songs are also included in the album, but they are not so many. They resemble the polyphonic songs in their ornamentation, melody and rhythmic structure. The Svoge Group and the Svidnya Troika often participate at different folk festivals and celebrations, TV and radio programmes. During the past few years they have been working with the famous folk singer Snejanka Borissova. “We know that these songs are ancient and beautiful. But we are the only ones who know this ... There is nobody to sing them now - nobody would set to do this. We feel very sorry about that…” These revelations of the grannies from Svoge and Svidnya speak of the value of this release.

Founded 45 years ago, the choir has performed in over 30 countries, and has had repeated appearances in some of them (with 16 concert tours in Japan only!). Many of the children who had sung in the choir have chosen music as their career and have become outstanding performers. The choir has been announced as a “Cultural ambassador in Europe”. Its conductor Hristo Nedyalkov has devoted his life and work to the choir and has written 400 songs for it. Many of them have become greatly popular, especially his winter and Christmas songs, which are included in the choir’s previous release (GD 287). Hristo Nedyalkov has received the “Stara Planina” order, as well as the outstanding Japanese “Golden Rays” Order of the sacred treasure. The choir’s fourth CD released on the Gega New label features songs based on poems by distinguished Bulgarian poets. As all songs of the choir, the ones included in the present CD are very melodious. Many of the songs are sung by children at kindergartens and schools and the release will be of use to such listeners as it contains the lyrics to the songs as well as the instrumental accompaniment.

BULGARIAN FOLK DANCES - PETKO RADEV & FRIENDS
ID: GD351
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection: Traditional
Subcollection: Folk Music

Petko Radev, clarinet, has a special place in Bulgarian music culture. On the one hand, he is one of the most renowned classical music performers. He played in the Bulgarian National Radio Orchestra, in Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra and the Milan Scala orchestra. His solo repertoire is impressive. Gega New has released recordings of his performances together with pianist Maria Prinz (GD 226). Petko Radev is a professor in the Sofia Academy of Music.
Together with that, he is a legend in Bulgarian folk music. Being a brilliant performer, he skillfully combines his virtuosic technique with magnificent improvisations on samples of Bulgarian folk music. He founded a folk music orchestra and participated in the recordings of many folk singers: Staika Gyokova, Nedialka Keranova, Yovcho Karaivanov, Gruycho Dochev, etc. For a period of nearly 20 years, performing partners of Petko Radev are among the best instrumentalists in Bulgaria: Petko Dachev, Kosta Kolev, Emil Kolev, Ivan Kirev, Yordan Yotov, Ivan Hadjiiski. Recordings of that period have long been perceived as classics in Bulgarian folk music and the next generation of performers (some of them his pupils in the Academy of Music) feel respect and regard for the musician who created a new style in the folk genre.
The album Petko Radev & Friends features the closest partners of the musician. It continues the release Petko Radev and Petko Dachev (GD 230). The two CDs are evidence of his talent and skill, of his ability to unite and develop the achievements of his older colleagues. Petko Radev’s unique style still continues to bring joy to the admirers of Bulgarian folk music.

MINTCHO MINTCHEV, violin - MARINA KAPITANOVA , piano

MINTCHO MINTCHEV, violin - MARINA KAPITANOVA , piano
ID: GD359
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Subcollection: Piano

“It is not that difficult to play the violin. It is a simple thing, once you reach a certain stage.” - Mintcho Mintchev often repeats these words of Professor Yfrah Neaman and goes on: “The difficult part is to be able to decide what you want. If you know what you really want, then you will find the way to accomplish it.” It looks as if he had always known what he wanted, because when we listen to him we are amazed at the ease and simplicity of his manner of playing. He started taking violin lessons at an early age and gave his first solo concert when he was nine. He studied at the “Lyubomir Pipkov” National Music School, the “Prof. Pancho Vladigerov” National Academy of Music and then furthered his violin studies for two years in London. His teachers were the famous violinists and pedagogues Emil Kamilarov and Yfrah Neaman. Mintcho Mintchev is laureate of the most prestigious international competitions: “Carl Flesch” in London, “Wieniawski” in Poland and “Paganini” in Italy, and today he is a respected adjudicator at these compositions. His concert activity is connected with the greatest orchestras in the world: the London Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Amsterdam Symphony Orchestra, Saint Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, Dresden Philharmonic, etc., and among the conductors that he worked with are Sir Neville Marriner, Sir Alexander Gibson, John Eliot Gardiner, Leonard Slatkin. He has played in the most renowned halls worldwide and also at some untypical places - for example in the big cave of the National Historical Archeological Reserve Madara. His repertoire is impressive and also includes many works composed specially for him. He plays on a Stradivarius - Baron Wittgenstein, made by the great Italian master in 1716 and bought by the Bulgarian country in 1877 for Mintcho Mintchev. Apart from his concert activity, Mintcho Mintcho is also famous with his work as a violin teacher. Since 1990 he has been a professor at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen, Germany, but he also leads master classes in many countries in Europe (in Bulgaria - in Sofia, at the international festivals “Varna Summer”, “March Music Days” in Russe, “Apolonia” in Sozopol, “Chamber Music Days” in his native town Gabrovo), in America, Asia and Australia. In spite of his busy concert, recording and teaching career, Mintcho Mintchev always finds time to support the activity of different foundations: he is president of the “Pancho Vladigerov” Foundation and president of the International Violin Adjudicators to the International Competition for Piano and Violin “Pancho Vladigerov”, artistic director of the International Summer Music Academy “Varna Summer”, member of the Managing Board of the International Foundation “St. St. Cyril and Methodius”. A worthy co-performer in this release is the pianist Marina Kapitanova. Her creative biography is also impressive. She is a preferred performing partner and has played with Dina Schneiderman, Emil Kamilarov, Mintcho Mintchev, Eugenia-Maria Popova, Vesko Eschkenazy (Panteleev), etc. She has worked in the master classes of Mintcho Mintchev, Rosa Fein, Sashko Gavrilov, Oleg Krisa, Sergey Kravchenko, Takashi Shimizo, Devin Early, Michael Frischenschlager and has participated in concerts throughout Europe, in Japan, China, Korea…She has received awards and diplomas for best accompaniment at the competitions “Pancho Vladigerov”, “David Oystrach”, “Beijing 1986”, Belgrade, etc. Since 2005 Marina Kapitanova has been associate professor in piano accompaniment at the “Prof. Pancho Vladigerov” National Academy of Music.

The Masonic movement is considered to have originated in the beginning of the 18th century. For this reason, the present release covers three centuries. The composers included are not only among the greatest musicians, but they are also renowned members of Masonic lodges. For example, Haydn and Mozart were members of "Zur wahren Eintracht" (True Harmony), and List was a member of "Zur Einigkeit" (Unity). The performers Ventseslav Nikolov and Ruzhka Tcharaktchieva are among the most distinguished Bulgarian musicians and laureates of prestigious international competitions. Currently they are respected members of the adjudicators’ committees of these competitions. Still giving concerts and making recordings of works from different epochs, they pass their experience to their students at the Prof. Pancho Vladigerov Academy of Music.
