ENRIQUE GRANADOS - LUDMIL ANGELOV, piano

Type: CD
Kolekce: InstrumentalPodkolekce: Klavír

Ludmil Angelov has always surprised the listener with the interesting programs he chooses to record. He has already recorded three programs on the Gega New label: Chopin’s complete rondos and variations (GD 135), works by Richard Strauss (GD 196) and together with the violinist Vesko Eschkenazy - works by Prokofiev, Shostakovich and Shchedrin (GD 269). Two of the releases received international awards. The CD with rondos and variations of Chopin won the Grand Prix du Disque Chopin of the 5th International Frédéric Chopin Competition in Warszaw, 2000, and the CD with Ludmil Amgelov and Vesko Eschkenazy performing received the Golden Muse award in 2003 by the Russian Cultural and Information Centre in Sofia. The present release is also expected to create great interest among music lovers, as Enrique Granados is one of the most distinguished Spanish composers. He began composing the Dances in 1883, but they took the completed form in which we know them today in 1900. According to the latest research of the composer’s works, the titles of only two of the pieces (No. 4 and No. 7) were given by the composer, and the rest were named by the publisher. The last two pieces - Moresque and Canción árabe, were published in 1890 and both have an oriental atmosphere about them.
It is not by chance that Ludmil Angelov has selected to record these works. He resides in Spain, where he has founded and is currently an artistic director of the International Music Festival in Toledo. The pianist began his artistic career in Bulgaria and he has also given concerts throughout Europe, the USA, South America, Hong Kong, Korea and Taiwan. He has been performing under the baton of conductors such as L. Foster, J. DePriest, J.-B. Pommier, M. Andreae, G. Pehlivanian, F. Glushchenko, J. Pons, P. Halffter, E. Garcia Asensio, M. Boni, R. Raichev, M. Angelov, E. Tabakov, V. Ghiaurov, R. Milanov, etc. Ludmil Angelov has been awarded with prizes at international competitions, including Senigallia (Italy, 1976), Frédéric Chopin (Poland, 1985), Palm Beach International Competition (USA, 1990), Piano Masters (Monte Carlo, 1994) and World Piano Masters Tour (France, 1997). He has had successful recitals at the La Roque d’Anthéron International Piano Festival and the International Chopin Festival in Warsaw. In 2002 Ludmil Angelov made his debut at the Newport Festival in the U.S.A. and in 2005 his debut at “Rarities of Piano Music” Festival in Husum, Germany. The pianist has also recorded for RСА, France Classique, Pentatone and Danacord. His performances have been broadcast by radio and TV stations in Bulgaria, France, Spain, Poland, Hungary, Argentina and Korea.

PLETENITSA - PEYO PEEV, gadulka

PLETENITSA - PEYO PEEV, gadulka
ID: GD328
Disk: 1
Type: CD
Kolekce: TraditionalPodkolekce: Folk Music

For centuries the gadulka has been among the most favourite instruments in Bulgaria. While in the past it was used only in some folk regions, today it is widely popular throughout the country. Since the middle of the 20th century, it has been invariably included in the folk music orchestras in all regions of Bulgaria. This brought about a change in the musical concept of the folk musicians. They began to unite melodies and techniques characteristic for various folk regions or other genres. They managed to prove that even though the gadulka is a more primitive instrument, it can still compete technically with the classical string instruments.
Peyo Peeev is among the most renowned young gadulka players. Born and brought up in the heart of Trakia (Southern Bulgaria), the musician’s first interest in music was connected with the children’s ensemble Zagorche, then he studied at the Philip Koutev Secondary School of Music in the town of Kotel (1989-1994) and the Academy of Music, Dance and Fine Arts in Plovdiv (1994-1998). His professional career began in the Philip Koutev State Ensemble of Folk Songs and Dances. After that he participated in the world-famous dance show Riverdance (1999-2000) and since 2000 he has been soloist in the Bulgarian National Radio Folk Music Orchestra. Peyo Peev has won twice the “Golden gadulka” prize named after the famous gadulka player Yanko Petrov (1996 and 1997), he participated in the world tour of the Mystery of Bulgarian Voices Choir in Hong Kong (1997) and is one of the founders of Academica formation (1998).
He gives concerts actively and participates in different projects with the world-famous musician Theodosii Spassov and the virtuoso players Petar Ralchev, Stoyan Yankulov, etc. These musicians also participate in the present release. Peyo Peev has also performed with different groups throughout Europe, the USA, Japan, and has made a lot of recordings.
The ten pieces included in this release are unique in their style and characterise his musical concept and creative imagination. They are real jewels, which skilfully combine both the traditional and contemporary approach.

With the participation of: Theodosii Spassov - kaval, Stoyan Yankulov - percussion, Angel Dimitrov - guitar, Bulgarian National Radio Folk Orchestra, conductor Hristofor Radanov, Peter Milanov - guitar, Kostadin Kostov - tupan, Dimitar Bogdanov - vocals; Petar Ralchev - accordion, Hristo Yotsov - percussion, Nikolai Antov - guitar, Krassimira Paurova - violin, Borislava Vassileva - violin, Gergana Chukleva - viola, Theodora Teneva - violoncello, Nedyalko Nedyalkov - kaval

Svetozar Ivanov has a successful international career as a pianist. He has made numerous appearances as recitalist and orchestra soloist in Europe and North America. Recent venues include Festival “Peter the Great” in the Netherlands, Robert Helps International Festival at Merkin Concert Hall in New York City, Fox River Chamber Music Festival in Wisconsin, Chautauqua Music Festival in New York, Sequoia Concerts in San Francisco, The Steinway Series and the Encore Series in Florida and numerous concert series at universities throughout the USA. He is a piano professor at University of South Florida and serves on the Artist Faculty at Green Mountain Chamber Music Festival in Vermont and as Artistic Director of the Steinway Piano Series in Florida. Svetozar Ivanov was born in Bulgaria and is a graduate of the Pancho Vladigerov Bulgarian National Conservatory. He holds the Doctor of Musical Arts degree from University of Michigan. The first CD of the pianist released by Gega New includes works by Debussy, Berg, Schoenberg and Scriabin (GD 322). The second CD features pieces which present the development of music art within a period of four centuries. Svetozar Ivanov says about the present program: “In 1914 Erik Satie composed Perpetual Tango which was meant to be repeated eternally. Seventy years later John Cage wrote a piece with the same title, shape and structure as Satie's tango. Separately and superimposed, these two works encircle this CD endlessly. The title, Naked Tango is borrowed from a stunning work (reproduced on the cover) by Argentine artist Guillermo Kuitca. I was very fortunate to know Robert Helps during the last few years of his life and he remains a great inspiration for me as a person and as a musician. His music, which is the heart of this CD, along with timeless sounds from the distant past (Tisdall, Rameau) is woven into the perpetual rhythm of the tango as expressed by Nazareth, Stravinsky, Shchedrin and Barber.”

Stefan Mutafchiev and Trakia Folk Ensemble

Stefan Mutafchiev and Trakia Folk Ensemble
ID: GD326

Type: CD
Podkolekce: Folk Music

Bulgarian folklore was greatly appreciated by the first Bulgarian composers as a source of inspiration. Their first choir works based on the West-European tradition of composition are in fact arrangements of folk songs. Later, when the ensembles for folk songs were founded, Bulgarian folk music arrangement became a separate genre and marked a vigorous growth. Many of the composers created their own folk-based works and one of the most prominent of these composers was Stefan Mutafchiev (1942-1997). His greatest achievements were connected with Trakia Folk Ensemble. He is one of the founders and of the ensemble and its conductor for a very long time. It is thus natural that exactly this ensemble should represent a part of the composer’s work. The songs which have been selected for the album were written in different periods. Both his choir works and works for the ensemble are equally enchanting, and some of them represent the best songs in the repertoire of Trakia Ensemble and are greatly applauded at concerts in Bulgaria and throughout the world.

Soloists: Nevyana Savova, Gaitanka Minkovska, Gergana Pavlova, Dilyana Peneva, Ulyana Raikova, Gergana Shopova, Boika Boyadjieva, Ivanka Garkova, Zheliazka Yankova, Gergana Pavlova, Jenya Mikova-Paunova, Ivanka Todorova, Tsonka Dimitrova-Manolova

Later she specialised in vocal and instrumental chamber music with Iain Ledingham, former Head of Opera at the Royal Academy of Music (London), and in solo repertoire with Dennis Lee. In November 2003 she took her Master of Musicology (MMus) at King’s College London with a Special Study on Schumann’s early piano music (passed with Distinction). In October 2008 she submitted her PhD thesis, which was completed with an AHRC scholarship, at the same institution. She won awards at prestigious piano competitions: 1st Prize of the National Piano Competition “Muzio Clementi” in Florence, “Pietro Napoli” in Livorno (three times), “Pasquale Cafaro” in Galatina, “J. S. Bach” in Sestri Levante, 1st prize as an accompanist in the “Jugend Musiziert” competition in Munster (Germany), the International Piano Competition in Stresa. She performs regularly in Italy, Germany and the UK in solo recitals and as an accompanying pianist. In January 2003 she made her debut in Bulgaria as a soloist performing Schumann’s Piano Concerto.
The works selected for this programme come as a logical choice, even though Schumann is a great challenge for every pianist (he was called the “Paganini of the piano”). Fiammetta Tarli demonstrates a permanent interest for this composer not only as a performer, but also as a musicologist. Her deep knowledge of his works helps her convey the composer‘s philosophy.

The 1950s marked the beginning of a renewal of Bulgarian folk art. Many national and local folk art festivals were founded at that time. Radio Sofia and the regional radio stations tried to attract talented singers and musicians for their programmes. For many of those people of different professions folk music became a destiny. One of the newly found talents of that time was the Dobroudja singer Dobra Savova. She was born in the village of Koriten, Dobroudja region and inherited the singing talent of her family. Her gift was appreciated well beyond the boundaries of her village when she was noticed by music specialists at a folk art festival. This set the beginning of her professional career and today we always connect the Dobroudja region with her songs. These are songs of her family and her village. People started listening to them on Radio Varna, at concerts, on the programmes of Radio Sofia. She has made numerous recordings, which will pass on to future generations her unique singing talent and authentic Dobroudja vocal style. The present programme presents a part of them. It begins with the song "Esen se zaesenyava", which has brought her popularity and the never-fading love of her listeners.

The present release features two big piano works from the age of Romanticism. Both works are characteristic for the Romantic style with their more liberal construction and instrumental forms, with their dramatic development, interesting combination of thematic centres and melodic motifs. Even though there are a number of registered recordings of these two works, Vesselin Stanev's interpretation enriches our concept of the stylistic method of Schumann and Liszt.
