Violoncellist Robin Clavreul and pianist Boris Nedeltchev present a programme of works by Henri Duparc and Francis Poulenc, two French composers who are fairly unknown in Bulgaria. The first one was associated with the epoch of French Romanticism, the second, a creative artist of the 20th century, one of Les Six. Duparc's Sonata for Violoncello and Piano is a brilliant work, of a fluent form and spontaneity of feeling, expressed by a 19-year old youth, brought up in the great French traditions. The masterfully written violoncello part offers a good opportunity to reveal the interpreter's emotional stanza. The recording highlights not only the temperament of the author, but also that of the performer, a pianist possessing a superb tone, a virtuoso who makes the violoncello sing. The same goes about Romance de Mignon. Poulenc's Sonata, was written in a period of creative maturity, after a number of works which brought their composer world fame. The four parts bear original titles, which bear evidence to their g

The CD of the prominent Bulgarian composer Alexander Yossifov comprises works for piano duos - an area in which he presents himself with original ideas. After the success of his opuses for two pianos and four-handed piano, he turned to experimenting with bigger keyboard formations. This resulted in works such as the Symphony Concertante for two piano duos and orchestra of 24 pianos (24 pianists or respectively 48 hands) which has attracted the attention of the Japanese audiences and musical critics alike. The composition was unanimously defined as a unique musical piece of the 20th century. Yossifov, who is the author of operas, ballets, music for children, symphonies and instrumental pieces (more than 1200 in number) ceaselessly seeks to give new meaning through innovative expressive devices and impressive timbre nuances. A creative artist of rich experience and mastery of constructing the musical form, he manages to find the balance between homogeneous instruments - the pianos, as well as between strings and a keyboard duo. In the present recording one can hear the wonderful Variations for Four-Handed Piano based on the well-known Bulgarian National-Revival song "Hubava si moya goro". In the Ballad for Two Four-Handed Pianos the author interweaves with virtuosity Bulgarian national rhythms and characteristic elements from the Japanese music (originally the piece was created for the Japanese duo Kodama and duo Ganevs). The large-scaled composition Concerto for Four-Handed Piano, String Orchestra and Percussion, brings eloquent evidence to Yossifov's remarkable melodic and rhythmic invention.

Gideon Waldrop (b. 1919, Texas) is presented in this release with five compositions created in the decades after World War II: Symphony No. 1 (1951), Suite for Orchestra from the Southwest (1964), Songs of the Southwest for Baritone and Chamber Orchestra (1983), Prelude and Fugue (1963), and Pressures (1955). In the compositions one can clearly trace the influence of the American folklore and, according to the composer's words, that of the Mexican songs, Waldrop's skills in orchestration, as well as the combination of primitive melodies and interesting modal patterns, the counter-pointing European techniques and his mastery in building up complicated polyphonic figures.

"Extraordinary finesse of performance", "crystal sound", "refined manner of sound production", "artistic freedom", "stable intonation" - these are only part of the definitions that Bulgarian and foreign critics give to the interpretations of the choir. The Flemish critic Hugo Heugebard exclaims: "… Ms. Spassova's conducting is exciting and masterful … from a little song, she creates a masterpiece…"
Founded in 1980, the Academic Folk Choir gained fame in a relatively short period of time with its high artistic level and highly professional approach to interpretation. The choir has been at the forefront of the "new folklore wave", a phenomenon characterized by folk intonations, asymmetrical rhythms and enrichment of musical folklore with contemporary expressive means. The achievements of the choir are due mainly to its conductor professor Vassilka Spassova and her assistants. Mrs. Spassova is respected both as a conductor and lecturer. Her lectures on the problems of Bulgarian choral art and arrangement of folk songs have evoked great interest in a number of prestigious music institutions and universities in Poland, the USA, Switzerland, Sweden, etc. Many works have been written especially for the choir. A part of them are included in the present release: Mehmetyo, My Love by Ivan Spassov, Pilentse pee by Krassimir Kyurkchiyski, The Sun Sets by Nikolai Stoikov, Listni se goro by Stefan Moutafchiev, and many others, a real example of great professionalism.

The CD presents three of Richard Strauss earliest compositions, performed by Ludmil Angelov. They clearly show the stylistic relationship between the great German masters of the piano miniature and the sonata and Richard Strauss - in the manner of constructing the pieces, of fusing the melodies, in the wealth of harmonic and metro-rhythmic ideas. The pianist shows both the classical clarity of the four-part sonata and the romantic dreams and aspirations contained the exquisite programme pieces from opus 9. Ludmil Angelov, who has been formed as a brilliant interpreter of the romantic style, recreates with great mastery and much poetry the rich imagery of Richard Strauss, fills with mood and various nuances the works, thus demonstrating their beauty and the spontaneity of feelings of the young Strauss. The recordings give an opportunity for music lovers to come to know better Richard Strauss' works from the early 1980s, the time of his maturity and study, of getting ready for the great music he was to create i

Sofia Madrigal Choir conducted by Prof. Stoyan Kralev has been present in Bulgaria's musical life for more than a quarter of a century now. Together with Orchestral Ensemble in 1997 they made an exquisite recording of two famous works by Antonio Vivaldi, the master of polyphony and Baroque style. "Beatus vir" is a vocal-instrumental work on religious texts, set in expressive music possessing the elevation and balance of spiritual words and turned into fine melodies, which have been modelled by the Maestro's hand of genius. "Gloria" was also created on a Latin cult text and is a work enjoying great popularity in our days. A complex, multi-part composition in which Madrigal demonstrates vocal and stylistic mastery, superb sounding, and excellent command of Baroque technique of performance with its rich ornamentation and reserve.

KONSTANTIN ILIEV - COMPOSITIONS

KONSTANTIN ILIEV - COMPOSITIONS

Type: CD

Orchestral Works
Subcollection: Orchestre

This is the first release of one of the most praised and denied creative artists of the Bulgarian school of composing. His works have always been subject to controversy, most often ending with the repudiation of the respective opus. Still, with his very first compositions he established himself as an innovator, vanguard author, relentless to the commonplace and the conventional in constant search of new roads for the Bulgarian musical output. The album has the character of a retrospection tracing down the development of a talent. The combination of Iliev's Concerto Grosso (1949-50) - one of his earliest works in the traditions of post-neoclassicism, with his Fragments (1968) and his last Sixth Symphony (1984-85), gives an idea of the author's enormous creative and intellectual potential. Iliev himself conducts his Fragments, dedicated to the Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra directed by him with love and inspiration. The other conductors featured in this CD, Vassil Kazandjiev and Yordan Dafov, are two of the composer's closest friends and colleagues.

Performed by: A, Dikov (piano), D. Paliev (kettle-drums), D. Boboshevski (xylophone), I. Lazarov (drums)

While the first CD of the "Dobroudja" Ensemble (GD 140) includes music not only from Dobroudja but also from other folk regions in Bulgaria, this programme is dedicated to the region which has given its name to the ensemble. Recorded and released 40 years after the ensemble's foundation, it pays tribute to the Dobroudja musical tradition. The selection of repertoire and authors brings evidence to the good taste of artistic director Kostadin Bouradjiev and his assistants. The singers from the women's choir have given a brilliant reading of the complex scores and the remarkable orchestra and its soloists complete the virtuoso picture with the most characteristic Dobroudja dances: Ruka, Opas, Sborenka, etc.
