NIGHTINGALES - VASSIL ARNAUDOV - SOFIA CHAMBER CHOIR
ID: GD195
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection: Choral Collection
Subcollection: Choir

The CD includes 23 songs performed by the female chamber choir founded in 1966 and bearing the name of the great choral conductor Vassil Arnaudov after his death. A number of the songs have been practised and sung many times under his direction and it is in this sense that the CD is of retrospective and commemorative character. The ensemble demonstrates its great scope of repertoire, performing works from the Renaissance, Classicism, and the 20th century. Many of the works have long become emblematic for the choir. The Vassil Arnaudov Sofia Chamber Choir is also deeply connected with the Bulgarian compositional output. Some of the works have been performed for the first time by the choir.

Hauer is an Austrian musician, composer and theorist who began his creative work in the daybreak of the 20th century under the influence of Impressionism. From the 1910s onwards he was ideologically and aesthetically associated with the twelve-tone technique, a composition system created by the Austrian composer Arnold Schoenberg. The pieces included in the compact disc present the evolution of Hauer's style: starting with Nomos, op. 2 and reaching to the composed in the last decade of his life pieces named Zwölftonspiel(A twelve-tone play). The pianist Anna Petrova underlines the character of Hauer's style of composing and his mastery of "playing" with the motifs-series in their combinations and sound colours. Particularly poetic is the performing of the clavier pieces on verses from Hölderlin's poetry and inspired by them. In them there is a harmony between verses, ideas, tone reproducing and compositional methodology. Hauer is a relatively lesser-known composer and because of that the CD has also a histori

The programme is a result of a two-years' work by Milen Slavov, who is composer, music producer, accordionist and has been living in the USA since 1997. Milen Slavov taught at the California University of Los Angeles and has twice received Performing Arts Fellowships in Music Composition; from the California Arts Council, and the Mississippi Arts Commission. The programme also contains the performance of Zhivka Papancheva - a singer, who has also been living in the USA for some years now and takes part in all concerts of Milen Salvov. Some other colleagues of his from Bulgaria are also featured - Petyo Kostadinov (who is at present soloist of the Bulgarian National Radio Folk Orchestra), Lyuben Dossev (who currently teaches at the Academy of Music and Dance Arts in Plovdiv, and is also conductor of Ensemble Trakia's Orchestra), and Teodor Dimitrov.

Georgi Arnaoudov is a composer who stood out in the generation which entered Bulgarian musical life in the 1980s. His works are marked by originality evident in both the manner of structuring and the characteristic features of sound-combinations, modes and timbres. He is the author of symphonies, concerto opuses, ballets and a number of chamber-instrumental works. What interests him most are the deep roots of Bulgarian folk music, Gregorian religious art, as well as the ancient Asian cultures. For his CD he has selected some of his most popular compositions, which have been included in the repertoire of recording companies and a number of Bulgarian instrumentalists. Titles like "The Circle of Rites", "Ritual" suggest the author's ambition to give new musical meaning to ancient messages, carried on throughout the centuries. Each of the compositions begins in a peculiar way, from one tone only; then it becomes a thread, which - being drawn out, twisted and re-twisted - turns the initial "silence" and inaction into an exciting musical flow and ends into the "silence" from the beginning again.

SCHUBERT AND BRAHMS - GEORGI BADEV, viola - BOJIDAR NOEV, piano
ID: GD172
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Subcollection: Piano

The programme features recordings of three works by Schubert and Brahms performed by the well-known Bulgarian musicians Georgi Badev and Bojidar Noev. Georgi Badev, who usually plays the violin, is occasionally tempted to play the viola. The musical instrument has been specially made for him by Bulgaria's most famous violin and viola maker and its sound is of highly satisfactory quality. Franz Schubert's masterpiece Sonata "Arpeggione" is a challenge for all artists who venture to perform this work of the early German Romanticism. The duo's interpretation of the piece is strikingly moving and filled with melody, harmonic beauty and virtuosity. It carries the spirit of the age of Classicism, which Schubert was so fond of. Brahms' two Sonatas Op. 120 are among the composer's last works. They unite his poetic, lyrical and deeply emotional feelings and express his emotional trepidation. The two performers overcome with ease and virtuosity the technical and ensemble difficulties that the two works present. The rec
