BULGARIAN FOLK SONGS AND DANCES

BULGARIAN FOLK SONGS AND DANCES
ID: GD230
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection:
Vocal Collection
Subcollection: Folk Music

The present programme is the first of a series of releases initiated by Gega New with the ambition to reveal the talent of some of Bulgaria's most famous folk musicians. Without aiming to go in chronological order, Gega New intends to present different folk artists and composers who have marked a path in the development of this genre of music. The first релеасе features recordings of Petko Radev, clarinet, and Petko Dachev, accordion.
Petko Radev founded the Bulgarian National Radio Folk Orchestra in the 1970s. It made an immediate impression on listeners with its new musical sound, new type of improvisations and fascinating introductions. Even though he has an academic musical background, having graduated from the Bulgarian Academy of Music, Petko Radev applies the best devices of the Thracian instrumental tradition in his performing. Making use of his profound classical training, he transfers to the studio and stage the brilliant and sophisticated sound, combined with his free stylistic improvisations, which he has inherited from virtuoso musicians from his childhood. During the years when he plays and records folk music he is also a teacher in the Sofia Academy of Music. Many folk musicians learn from his talent and he himself is the creator of a school for interpreting of Bulgarian folklore. After working for 11 years as first clarinetist in the Milan La Scala, he came back to Bulgaria but never returned to folk music as a performer. Currently he has dedicated his life entirely to classical music and to his students. Nevertheless, his wide experience still makes him an important consultant to young musicians, and he can often be seen at all folk festivals and singing competitions.
Another famous musician who has played in the folk orchestra of the Bulgarian National Radio since its very creation is the accordionist Petko Dachev. While the Thracian wedding bands of the 1960s and 1970s abounded in perfect clarinetists, the accordion still had a subordinate place and the players used to keep to simpler improvisations. This is what makes Petko Dachev's vast creative method so prominent. In his improvisations he enriched the Strandja vocal mode of playing with a characteristic ornamental strain and in this way created a new Strandja-Thracian style, which quickly found its followers and has been widely exploited by musicians recently.
By establishing a new orchestra, Petko Radev and Petko Dachev attained a new mode in the interpretation of Bulgarian music folklore, which responds to the creative requirements of a whole generation of folk musicians. All renowned singers and instrumentalists have made recordings with them. This makes this programme so rich and various, featuring solo performances of artists, loved by the audience.

IVAN PETROV-IOCHAN - Orthodox Liturgy - Christi Geburt 2000

CDs: 1
Type: CD

Sacred Music
Subcollection: Choir

Christ's birth is one of the most glorious Christian holidays. The holiday church service within the Orthodox tradition is accompanied with very beautiful chants. The works performed are usually by anonymous authors or Bulgarian and Russian composers from the end of 19th and the beginning of 20th centuries. In most cases they know thoroughly the exigencies of the church canon. That is the reason for this music to have such a purifying effect not only on the believers but on the admirers of good music too. For all of them is the release dedicated to the 2000 anniversary of Christ's birth, containing music by Ivan Petrov-Iochan. The liturgy is created by a contemporary composer, which is an exceptionally rare phenomenon for the work of the Bulgarian composers from the end of the 20th century. One must have courage to interfere in such a delicate and severely canonical matter. Besides, one needs serious training, profound knowledge and a sense of proportion to feel to what extent to use secular intonations. Therefore the connoisseurs of Orthodox musical tradition will be pleasantly surprised by the skill of Ivan Petrov-Iochan, who combines the exigencies of the Orthodox Church with elements of the secular vocal music. The education the composer received at the Seminary and the Theological Academy in Sofia, and his practice in the most famous Bulgarian choirs (the Svetoslav Obretenov Bulgarian Philharmonic Choir, Joan Kukuzel Angeloglasniat, Gusla, Kaval, the choir to the Alexander Nevsky Memorial Cathedral, the choir of the Opera Theatre in Sofia, etc.) are the base on which he builds up his work. The sound is very authentic, thanks to the exclamations and the chime of the bells, as in a true holiday liturgy.

Soloists: Ivan Petrov-Iochan (bass), Nikola Ghiuselev (bass), Nikolina Pankova (soprano), Noi Nikolov (tenor), Alexandrina Milcheva (mezzo-soprano)

STAMITZ PENDERECKI - Viola Concertos - Dimitar Penkov, viola

STAMITZ PENDERECKI - Viola Concertos - Dimitar Penkov, viola
ID: GD250

Concerto per viola ed orchestra, NDR Orchestra, Aldo Ceccato, conductor

There are two centuries that separate the composers included in this release - Karl Philipp Stamitz (1745-1801) and Krzystof Penderecki (1933). Living in two different epochs, their works reflect not only the development of music, but also the history of the viola concerto. Stamitz' Konzert D Dur for Viola and Orchestra was composed when the genre was still in its early stage, the interest in the instrument itself was quite lively and its technical means and expressive resources provoked the curiosity of the composers. When Penderecki wrote Concerto per viola ed orchestra, the viola had long since established itself in the composers' practice. The idea of combining the two composers is very interesting and requires incredible artistic mastership.
The two concertos have been recorded by the talented Bulgarian viola player Dimitar Penkov. Having graduated from the Pancho Vladigerov State Academy of Music in Sofia, he is laureate of a number of prestigious international competitions. He specialized with Prof. Yfrah Neaman in London and has enjoyed a successful performing career working with conductors like Pierre Bartholomee, Michael Tabachnik, Aldo Ceccato, Gilbert Varga, Vassil Kazandjiev, Konstantin Iliev, Alexander Vladigerov and others. Accepting the invitation of Olivier Messiaen and Pierre Bartholomee, he made a premire performance of Penderecki's viola concerto in France, which was recorded live by Radio Paris (1985). Since 1983 he has been living in Hanover, Germany.

In its historical development Bulgaria has undergone many vicissitudes. Great masses of people settled to live on its territory, accepting the traditions of the local people and at the same time influencing their way of life and culture. This resulted in the appearance of specific regions in the country with their own unique, diverse and multi-layered traditions. A region of such specific nature is the northeastern part of the country. Tracing the art of its singers and instrumentalists, we can draw a picture of the musical and folk traditions of the area.
Sonya Kancheva is a renowned singer from Northern Bulgaria and boasts of a beautiful voice and an exceptional repertoire. She has collected and recorded hundreds of songs from her native place which illustrate to a great extent the interaction of local and adopted musical culture.
Since 1951, when she made her first recordings with Radio Sofia, she has recorded over 270 songs, and there are about 500 more in her personal archives. For many years she has been visiting a great number of villages in this region and the songs she collected from there seem to live a new live of their own with her performance. Sonya Kancheva is the first singer from the region of Varna who has revealed to the listeners the fascinating folklore of Northern Bulgaria. She is still a much favoured performer by people of different ages and an example for the younger folk singers.

PIRIN FOLK SONGS - Zdravka and Pirinka Hristovi
ID: GD264
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection:
Traditional
Subcollection: Folk Music

Contemporary musical life in Bulgaria creates new musical forms based on folklore. Thеy arouse our curiosity towards the original sources and ancient culture. The present recording of the twin sisters Zdravka and Pirinka Hristovi calls to mind the lasting values from the past. Having grown up in Bansko, a town situated at the foot of the Pirin Mountains (Southwest Bulgaria), they had the chance to pick up its specific local culture. Their musical talent took them to the Higher School of Music and Pedagogy in Plovdiv. After graduating, they become soloists of the Pirin State Ensemble for Folk Songs and Dances in Blagoevgrad. Their long-time connection with this famous ensemble ranks them among the best performers of traditional Bulgarian folk music. Together with the Pirin Ensemble, and then with Sofia Singers Folk Choir, the Hristovi sisters have toured many countries worldwide. Currently they are teachers in folk singing at the National High School of the Humanities in the town of Blagoevgrad. This programme is a kind of return back to the roots of Bulgarian folklore and presents the musical traditions of Bansko from the ancient style of singing "na atzane" (a complex vocal technique that few of today's singers have mastered), up to the two-part singing from the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries. The instrumental accompaniment to the songs, done with artistic taste and a feeling of style, completes the beauty of the melodies and brings genuine pleasure to those who are ready to open their hearts to the charm of the Pirin songs.
