Firma Melodiya presents recordings by Alexander Korneyev, an outstanding flutist, People’s Artist of the RSFSR and laureate of the State Prize of Russia.

A world known soloist, Korneyev won the recognition primarily as a concert musician. He performed with well-known musicians such as Lev Oborin, Ivan Kozlovsky, Sviatoslav Richter, Emil Gilels, Mstislav Rostropovich and the Beethoven Quartet. A soloist of the Big Symphony Orchestra of All-Union Radio for many years, he played under the leadership of some of the most prominent maestros and at times performed as a symphony and chamber conductor himself. Also, he realized performing versions of a number of flute compositions.

The musician’s concert repertoire was extraordinary extensive, from early baroque to contemporary composers. He made dozens of recordings released on vinyl and CD. This album features one of the gems performed by Korneyev, a peak of baroque flute - six sonatas for flute and harpsichord, and the partita for solo flute by J.S. Bach.

Most evidently, Bach composed his flute works along with other chamber opuses in Köthen during 1717 to 1723. At the time, the composer focused on solo and ensemble instrumental music. Arguably, two of the six sonatas (BWV 1031, 1033) were penned by his son Carl Philipp Emanuel who later served at the court of Crown Prince Frederick of Prussia, a big lover of the flute.

The part of harpsichord was performed by a remarkable ensemble musician, People’s Artist of Russia, Alexander Bakhchiev. The recordings were made in 1971 and 1974.

Johann Sebastian Bach’s cycle of preludes and fugues The Well-Tempered Clavier takes a very special place in the world of music. It is not just one of the immortal masterpieces of the world music literature. It literally is an encyclopedia of polyphonic art, its Alpha and Omega; it is a desk book of every thinking musician, a necessary manual for life, and at the same time an inexhaustible source of pleasure. Bach finished the second part of The Well-Tempered Clavier in 1744, twenty years after he created the first part. The reason for composing the send part was his wish to collect in one book the preludes and fugues he wrote at different time and lost among old papers. Bach also wanted to substantially rework these preludes and fugues, give them their final form applying the experience he gained through the years. And that was a truly all-bracing experience. Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier gives plenty of play to very different performer’s interpretations. None of the significant music works has caused as many difficulties and debates about the way it should be interpreted. Such a deep, comprehensive and truly artistic approach to the cycle is typical of Sviato- slav Richter. “When I set to The Well-Tempered Clavier, I get always consumed with desire not to exclude any sides for the sake of one narrow and dogmatic position… I am convinced that Bach can be played differently, with different articulation and different dynamics. So long as the whole is preserved, so long as the strict contours of style are not distorted, so long as the performance is convincing enough”, Richter said.

For the anniversary of maestro Vladimir Spivakov, Firma Melodiya presents a unique, previously unreleased recording of the Moscow Virtuosi chamber orchestra made on 28 December 1988 in the Big Hall of the Moscow Conservatory.

From the first years of their existence, the Moscow Virtuosi, founded by Vladimir Spivakov, lived up to the highest standards of mastery on both domestic and global scales. It was a genuine 'orchestra of soloists' comprising prize-winners of domestic and international competitions, concertmasters of the best orchestras of Moscow many of whom could count on a brilliant solo career.

Although the Virtuosi spent a lot of time in the studio, it is the orchestra’s concert recordings that convey the atmosphere of a living, inspired contact with the audience.

The charitable activities Vladimir Spivakov has been involved in for many years now are evidence of his great human responsiveness, his desire to support talented children and his empathy for people’s suffering. The pre-New Year concert of 1988 was a fundraising event to benefit the Armenian children who suffered in the earthquake.

The concert, comprising music of Johann Sebastian Bach, featured other prominent musicians as well - Mikhail Pletnev, Araxia Davtian, an Honoured Artist of the Armenian SSR, and Bernard Soustrot, a world renowned French trumpeter. However, Adagio from the Easter Oratorio for oboe and orchestra performed instead of an encore by Alexei Utkin, an oboist and future founder of the Hermitage Ensemble, was a genuine climax of the event. The music reflecting upon passions of Christ’s earthly life sounded like a requiem for the tens of thousands of people who were buried alive in Spitak and Leninakan.

Dietrich Buxtehude died 300 years ago. This North German, 17 years older than Johann Sebastian Bach, was one of the major figures in the 17th century, particularly in the areas of organ and sacred music. Japanese organist Kei Koto, who is professor at the Lausanne Conservatory and author of a number of superb recordings (consecrated particularly to Bach), makes her debut for Claves with a magnificent triple album featuring the organ music of the master from Lübeck; the recordings were made on five historic organs in Northern Europe (Hamburg, Roskilde, Groningen, Payerne and Tangermünde) between the end of 2006 and September 2007. In order to increase interest in this anthology, she has added a CD centering around Buxtehude’s “Magnificat” for organ and similar works by illustrious predecessors and contemporaries. The texts in the accompanying booklet were written by eminent French specialist Gilles Cantagrel, whose biography about the German musician that was published by Fayard in 2006 already has earned recognition as a standard work.
