Organ of the Martinerk, Groningen
After her magnificent Buxtehude boxed-set in 2007 (CD 50-2704/06), Japanese organist Kei Koito pursues her collaboration with Claves Records by laying the foundation stone of a cycle dedicated to masterpieces by Johann-Sebastian Bach. Recorded in June 2009 on the organ of the Groningen Martinikerk in the Netherlands, she presents an anthology of - as ever - most carefully selected pieces. Original scores such as the Preludes and Fugues BWV 543, 548 et 743, the chorals "Liebster Jesu, wir sind hier" and "Schmücke dich, O liebe Seele", and the Partita "Sei gegrüsset, Jesu gütig", but also transcriptions by Bach (Adagio from the Sonata for violin and harpsichord BWV 1016) and by herself (Trio in G from the Sonata for viola di gamba and harpsichord BWV 1027). Kei Keito excels in them, showing to those who had not yet encountered it her very special affinity with the St-Thomas cantor. She founded a Bach Festival in 1997 in Lausanne (where she lives), Festival that has become a reference in the matter.

Ensemble Orlando - J.S. Bach - Masses BWV 234 & 235 - La Cetra Barockorchester

After a first album dedicated to polyphonic rarities by the Franco-Flemish composer Philippe de Monte (Claves CD 50-2712), the Ensemble Orlando de Fribourg and conductor Laurent Gendre, escorted for the occasion by the ensemble La Cetra from Basel, have set out to conquer the gigantic Johann-Sebastian Bach, and two of his four “Missa Breve”: Masses BWV 234 and 235. As Etienne Barilier, who wrote the booklet, points out, we know neither their precise destination nor the exact date of composition; we only know that they were written between 1735 and 1744. “If they remain relatively little known, even today, it is because they are not ex nihilo creations, says the author. Virtually all the pieces that make them up (six per mass: the Kyrie, followed by a Gloria subdivided into five parts) were borrowed from cantatas composed ten or twenty years previously, between 1723-1726. It may well even be that the very few “original” pieces of these masses were not in fact orginals, but came from cantatas that have since been lost”. And so what! The genius of the Thomaskirche Cantor is present and there is little chance that anyone listening to these Lutheran masses may get a feeling of déja-vu. As Barilier remarks, “the same pieces, transposed into different key signatures, with different orchestral colours and new texts, are no longer the same pieces.”

Antonio Vivaldi Concertos

Antonio Vivaldi Concertos

Firma Melodiya presents a recording of instrumental concertos by Antonio Vivaldi.

The Italian composer went down in history as an outstanding master of baroque concerto. His legacy includes over 500 concertos (about half of them composed for violin), which combine composing and virtuosic mastership with a truly Italian temperament, strict orderliness of the whole with inexhaustible inspiration and ingenuity. Vivaldi adopted a three-movement model of concerto, but even his most conventionally built works almost always conceal a surprise - an unusual structure of a movement, sudden modulation, a striking harmonic turn, and play of Forte and Piano shades. Just as it was the case with Bach, Vivaldi was sunk into oblivion for almost two centuries, and only in the 20th century his music came out to the foreground of world culture.

Vivaldi:
Oboe Concerto in A minor, RV461
Concerto for Violin & Viola da gamba, 'La maggiore' RV546
Concerto in E minor, RV 278
Cello Concerto in B minor, RV424
Concerto for Violin & Cello in B flat minor, RV 547
Flute Concerto, Op. 10 No. 2 in G minor, RV 439 'La notte'

Antonio Vivaldi’s concertos are performed by the prominent representatives of domestic music art Oleg Kagan (violin), Natalia Gutman (cello), Evgeny Nepalo (oboe) and Albert Gofman (flute), and conducted by Rudolf Barshai and Lev Markiz, who opened the style of chamber performance of baroque music for the Soviet audience. The Night concerto features an ensemble of soloists of the Moscow Philharmonic Society led by David Oistrakh.

Emil Gilels Plays Bach - Vol. 2 - First Time on CD

Emil Gilels Plays Bach - Vol. 2 - First Time on CD
ID: MELCD1002224
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection: Baroque
Subcollection: Piano and Orchestra

Firma Melodiya presents recordings of J S Bach’s works performed by Emil Gilels.

This disc continues the series of recordings made by the great pianist. However, these recordings suggest a different view on Gilels’ performing art.

Emil Gilels entered the music life of the USSR as a virtuoso in the best, romantic sense of the word. His inspired artistry always produced a magnetic effect on the audience. He conquered the world with his performances of Beethoven’s sonatas, Mozart’s works in Salzburg, and interpretations of Tchaikovsky’s and Rachmaninov’s concertos. It was difficult to assume that a well-established stereotype of romantic pianism hid an inspired and profound interpreter of Bach’s music.

Johann Sebastian Bach was never at the centre of Gilels’ repertoire. They were more like individual pieces, but that was exactly what made them so unexpected at his concerts. Nevertheless, he kept revisiting some of them time and again.

This disc features recordings made in 1948 to 1968. Not claiming to be authentic and at the same time not falling into excessive romanticism, Emil Gilels shapes his own unique vision of the great cantor’s music world.
