This is the third CD in the new Metier series of contemporary lyrical British music - following MSV28520 Music by Veale and Crawford and MSV28522 Pipings and Bowings - Lyrical English Chamber Music by Hurd, Milford & Blackford.
As a further release in our exploration of lyrical English Chamber Music (following MSV28520 - Music by Veale and Crawford and MSV 28522 Pipings and Bowings - Music by Hurd Milford and Blackford) here we have a disc featuring some lovely pieces composed by David Dubery. Being largely self-taught he works in a traditional language preferring miniature to medium sized projects. His music is tonal, rooted in past traditions, and working with dancers and actors has ensured rhythm and movement play an integral part in its composition. |

TRAJECTORIES - music by David Gorton - KREUTZER QUARTET - NEIL HEYDE (cello) - PETER SHEPPARD SKÆRVED (violin) RODERICK CHADWICK (piano) |
ID: MSVCD92104 CDs: 1 |
Subcollection: Cello David Gorton is a very highly respected British composer whose music is firmly modernist - very difficult to play, but which is also very approachable and accessible. Here Neil Heyde provides a stunning performance of the Cello Sonata and a second version, given a very different interpretation in a live recital. We have the two tiny but intense Caprices for solo violin, a fine work for Piano Trio and the String Quartet Trajectories, a modern model for that genre. All are first recordings, produced and supervised by the composer.
The music of David Gorton first began to receive attention in 2001 when he was awarded the Royal Philharmonic Society Composition Prize while still a student. The subsequent commission for the London Sinfonietta, Oblique Prayers, outlined a distinctive and unique sound-world described by one commentator as combining “an acute imagination for delicate timbral invention with a prodigious command of the unfolding of this half-hour ritual drama” (The Independent).
Gorton studied composition with Harrison Birtwistle and Simon Bainbridge. His music can be described as technically demanding for the performers, and for the listener it is complex and challenging - one commentator remarked that it is music in a constant state of restless evolution.
As a soloist and chamber musician Neil Heyde has appeared throughout Europe, and in the USA and Australia. Since the mid 90s he has been the cellist of the Kreutzer Quartet and he now heads the postgraduate programmes at the Royal Academy of Music, where his work focuses on the relationships between performance, composition and analysis. He has commissioned and premiered many solo and chamber pieces and is also dedicated to performing and recording neglected areas of the repertoire.

COSMIC LIGHT - Piano Music by Keith Barnard - Jeffrey Grossman |
ID: MSV28516 CDs: 1 |
Collection: Instrumental Subcollection: Piano Keith Barnard is a British composer whose music, rooted in spiritual exploration, both Eastern and Western, and is what is generically and rather loosely called "New Age" but which description does his thoughtful and deeply felt compositions a disservice. This world premiere recording is finely executed by American pianist Jeffrey Grossman.
Keith Barnard (b. 1950) was born in London, England, and studied composition with Arnold Cooke, a pupil of Paul Hindemith. Barnard’s music is often explicitly linked with healing and color rays, and many of his titles name the colors invoked by particular compositions and their instrumentation and designation.
Though Barnard has composed music for many instrumental and ensemble combinations, music for the piano forms the core of his output. His style draws together diverse influences, including the traditional Romantic pianistic tradition represented by Chopin and Liszt, the colorist French impressionist tradition of Debussy and Ravel, the 20th century mysticism of Alan Hovhaness and, above all, the music and philosophy of Alexander Scriabin.
As an active pianist himself, Barnard has frequently appeared in concert throughout Europe performing his own works for piano. His music for the instrument ranges from short pieces up to The Secret Tones of the Divine Spheres, a one-movement piano work of nearly three hours duration. Besides piano music, he has written a chamber opera, four symphonies, concerti for cello, piano, and organ, and numerous chamber works. In recent years, he has composed a series of organ works at the behest of American organist Carson Cooman, including 'The Purest Silence of the Divine', an evening-length organ cycle.

MYSTERY LIGHTS & NIGHTFLOWER - CLIVE BELL & DAVID ROSS |
ID: MJ0402 CDs: 1 |
Collection: Jazz CLIVE BELL is Britain’s leading player of the Japanese shakuhachi, and a founder member of Jah Wobble’s Deep Space project. DAVID ROSS was drummer for the instrumental combo Kenny Process Team. But none of this would prepare you for Mystery Lights, their first duo recording. This is a spacious, intimate music, full of colour and melody, exploratory but highly accessible. Many instruments, both acoustic and electronic, familiar and unfamiliar, weave a spell hard to resist. This album was made in collaboration with Walter & Donald the budgerigars. Recorded live at "The Earl of Kilgorlin". CD includes a video playable on any PC.

Laurence Crane - 20th Century Music - Michael Finnissy, piano - solo piano pieces 1985-1999 |
ID: MSV28506 CDs: 1 |
Collection: Instrumental Subcollection: Piano Laurence Crane's music is thoroughly contemporary, but has hardly a dissonance in the whole 80 minutes of this CD. His music can be described as super-minimalist, but that would ignore the incredibly fine transitions of harmony and time embedded in his works. Ultimately this is music for the post-modernist age, and it can have no better advocate than Michael Finnissy, himself one of the foremost composers of our time.
